A brutal October gale lashed Montgomery and New Orleans area towns causing extensive flooding and building collapse. Reports say 18 dead, thousands of orange trees fallen, and millions in property damage. Wrecked bridges, drowned workers, and downed wires halt services as rescue begins.
New York dispatch reports rebels bombarded Armicao and Nicheroy with 20 Peixoto soldiers killed. Civilians flee to Petropolis as Peixoto clings to power with 5000 troops including police and firemen. Marauders raid homes, destitution rises, and agitation grows amid a beleaguered capital. An American flag boat was fired on earlier. Alem the radical leader is under arrest in Lianos Agnes.
In Nevana Missouri on October 8 a woman and two young children crossed an 80 foot Missouri Pacific trestle as a 58 car freight approached. The woman leapt to safety and escaped with minor injuries. the children were knocked clear but unharmed, though the wreckage left them shaken.
At Farnham Stopers house in OMAA the Walls of New York set burned when a gas jet hit a fly, triggering a blaze. A back wall collapsed sending several firemen, including Capt. John McBride and firefighters Ruane Downs Mattson Gaynor, to injury and later burial under brick. One piper Albert Jerome remained missing. The 1861 theater, built for 260,000 by ex-Gov Boyd, faced 80,000 insurance and loss of costumes and props.
The forecast for Indiana calls for a cooler Tuesday night with cloudy skies. Wednesday is expected to be cooler and fair with lighter winds and improved air quality overall.

Building inspector Fitchey, blamed by contractors for a Southside collapse that injured two men, visited the site Tuesday and recovered a heavy iron brace he says caused the wreck. He claims the brace had crystallized and was spliced and that his inspection was not at fault.
In Marshfield Oregon on October 3 a party of seven capsized near Oooshay when a gust toppled their boat. Four men and children drowned. Two women and a child were rescued. The dead identified as B. M. DeLowney two children and John Wickland.
Cononrus October 3 Ralph Smith Seed 14 son of D L Smith Panhandle passenger agent shot and killed his playmate George Mason 14 Tuesday morning. Investigators call the incident likely accidental. Heavy rains flood Water in Italy near Naples Florence Lucca Genoa Bologna. Railways submerged, bridges ruined, houses swept away, many drowned and vast livestock losses reported. Bologna suffers most.
Olaf Olsen argues for the Republican cause while canvassing factories, posing ironical questions about refunding ordinances and political favors. Edward Hawkins predicts Sullivan will be elected mayor, citing experience under Denny and the need for strong common sense, with a safety board official forecasting a 2,000 to 8,000 vote margin for Sullivan.

Dozens of physicians arrive in the city for the Mississippi Valley Medical Association annual convention to be held over three days. Delegates from St Joseph Missouri physician J T Berghoff and U S Army Surgeon General Stanbury are among attendees with expect extra visitors. Plymouth church hosts general sessions while Meridian Street M E church hosts business sessions. Officials anticipate about 600 delegates 200 visitors and up to 1000 total attendees aided by Gov Matthews welcoming address.
