Constables Bid For Rent Work In Indianapolis
Competition among constables for the rent collecting business drives costs down. In Center township costs for possession suits are $2, the township gets 3 dollars, the constable $1. Some constables even cut their fee to hold a good client. In outlying townships the constable still earns, the justice collects 3.5 cents, and the township a quarter. To win more business, constables may bunch cases in outer townships and reduce their own fee. The aim is to lower costs for rental agencies, though tenants often do not gain possession. Justice White in Washington township at Broad Ripple is a frequent venue. The washerwoman faces court costs reduced by competition, but may still bear travel time and effort.
