A major blaze on Market Street destroyed the Baldwin hotel and theater with fears of loss of life. Firefighters saved some guests while 8 maids perished and several others were injured. The blaze began at 3 15 a m and caused extensive property damage estimated at 1.5 to 2 million dollars.
Gen. Carpenter with 700 United States cavalry took possession of Puerto Principe after a formal surrender by Gen. March. Cuban general Lopez Recio Loynaz plans to enter with troops and disband arms. Maj. Allison and Capt. Page arrived with news of engineers to land at Marianao and Col. Young was instructed to receive them.
The docket reports Judge Baker suspends sentence for John Ryder Indianapolis post office messenger who pleaded guilty to stealing 1.75 from a letter. Mayhew Terre Haute pleads guilty to counterfeiting, gets one year and a day in Columbus Ohio penitentiary. Brown Paoli fined ten dollars and jailed until paid for revenue law violation. Clark Greenwood fined ten dollars and jailed until paid. Schadewald Fort Wayne fined twenty five dollars and costs for an indecent letter. Disinger Sedalia fined ten dollars and costs for revenue law violation. Haute boo gang fined ten dollars each.
Commodore A S Crowninshield urges Congress to boost U S Navy manpower to 20000 enlisted and 2500 apprentices in his annual report to the Secretary of the Navy. He cites wartime sea power as essential and notes troop transport needs during continued hostilities. He also criticizes naval militia limits and praises naval gunners while highlighting training gaps.
The county and township reform commission adopted resolutions proposing to reorganize township duties into a three member unpaid committee and to vest county taxes and appropriations in a representative body of taxpayers. An administrative board would review major contracts and a state board of revision could correct fraudulent or improvident contracts. The commission plans to sponsor a forthcoming reform law and to seat all next legislators on the commission.
A party of 15 gold seekers from Puget Sound to the Kuskokwim river were shipwrecked near Dutch Harbor. They were joined by a Moravian missionary family and later murdered by Indians while the group slept after reaching shore. Most victims were from Iowa Illinois and Michigan.
In Monticello Georgia a mob executed Ed Merriwether a colored man after the coroner's jury verdict found him guilty in connection with the murder of Joe Pope. Merriwether was hanged dragged through streets and shot while officials lost control of the jail.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity through 8 p m on November 24 calls for cold but fair conditions. Overnight Wednesday will remain chilly with clear skies and Thursday is expected to stay dry and cool. Morning readings showed 11 degrees at 7 am, with 22 degrees at noon and 23 degrees at 2 pm.
Earl Van Pelt of 831 Grove street appeared in police court for the second time this week charged with peddling without a license. William Claus of 788 Massachusetts avenue, also selling horse radish, testified his action stemmed from Van Pelt undercutting prices. Claus did not prosecute at first, and the Wednesday hearing was dismissed as lacking merit.
Judge Carter handles a major Marion county case over the 552 acre Thomas Schooley homestead in Franklin township. The land was mortgaged to First National Bank for 814000 after Schooley’s insolvency, with Brown the son in law later claiming the property and transferring portions to relatives. The bank's claim led to a court action by Brown and his children to quiet their titles to the transferred portions.
Ernest Alexander, a Negro, was fined five dollars and jailed sixty days after throwing a rock in a fight at Wabash and Delaware streets and striking Mrs BE C Brown. Saloon-keeper Hoffman of 928 S Meridian was found not guilty of permitting a dice game as police seized a dice box but the dice cubes disappeared.
Belle Franklin a young colored woman who alarmed female inmates at the county jail by claiming she attempted suicide was brought before Judge Alford for trial on Wednesday morning. She is charged with stealing a gold watch and chain and $3 from Joseph Greenwood on November 6 in a rooming house on West Washington Street.
John H. Smith a Washington township farmer was named by county commissioners to succeed Flavius Myers as superintendent of the county poor asylum after an investigation found no misconduct or cruelty by Myers. County attorney Brown disclosed the outcome Wednesday and the appointment followed the election.
City engineer Jeup recommends postponing the planned improvement of Brightwood area roads. The projects will be held for the next construction season.
A 15 year old colored boy Willie Partee and a younger companion robbed a grocery tapping the till for 3 dollars while the clerk prepared cheese. They were caught. Judge Leathers is disqualified. Krag Reynolds receivership suits may go before Judge Carter. Leathers has ties to his law partner John W Holtzman in 7000 dollars of claims against Marcy's Window a insolvent concern.
The Scottie Balfour trial in a criminal court was continued after he allegedly struck War man H. Flack with a baseball bat during a dice game at the Eagle's Nest resort west of Indianapolis. Flack, one of the players, narrowly survived the assault.
