Washington reports show Republican leaders split on an extra congressional session with some fearing obstruction by anti administration members. The piece notes 28 retiring senators and pressure from currency reform forces while Congress debates appropriations and the Philippine matter looms in the Senate.
A severe early season blizzard sweeps the west and northwest from Minnesota to Colorado. Trains halted as six to ten inches of snow fall, telegraph lines fail, and temperatures plummet from 80 to 15 degrees. Storm causes fires and hay losses in Oklahoma along with hurricane winds.

Princeton Indiana is troubled by a suspected arsenic poisoning in a family of four. John Schwieckert, a miner, his wife and two children drink contaminant from the well. All are out of danger except Mrs. Schwieckert.
Evansville native W C Zaring is appointed chief oil inspector by State geologist Blatchley to replace Capt Hall whose term ends in March. Zaring leaves deputy oil inspector post and has prior service as deputy state treasurer. James Epperson will become chief inspector next March, seen as miner friendly. Geo H Ashley remains chief assistant state geologist.
Captain Alexander H Hess, clerk of the supreme court, retired after serving until Monday. R A Brown succeeds him. Hess will return home in Washington next spring.
Capt. Mueller reports bands of robbers in Porto Rico painting Black Hand marks on homes to extort money. He describes bands as set loose by hostile Spaniards. robbing both Porto Ricans and Spaniards, killing owners and burning plantations if demands are unmet. Americans fear return of bands as troops withdraw.
The clipper Atalanta sinking near Portland marks one of the worst local maritime disasters in years. Surviving crew member George Fraser recalls men laughing in the rigging as death loomed and a Tacoma shanghaier crew of twenty one perished before rescue.
The six story Squires packing plant in Cambridge burned, destroying the main building. Nine firemen were injured by falling walls, with Lewis Fairburn severely hurt and later dying at Massachusetts General Hospital. An employee named Ford was believed buried but was found alive. Insurance covers 300000.
Don Carlos Buell, 80, veteran of three wars, died near Rockport Kentucky on Saturday. He served with distinction in the Civil War and is credited with aiding Ulysses Grant at Shiloh. He later faced disfavor, left the army, and worked as pension commissioner in Louisville during a Cleveland administration while mainly pursuing mining interests.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity calls for colder weather and rain Monday night, followed by much colder temperatures and rain turning to snow Tuesday. Observed temps include 50 at 7 am Monday, 63 at noon, and 65 at 2 pm Monday.

A small blaze beneath a second floor school room at the Colored orphans home on Senate Ave and Twenty first St caused smoke to roll into the classroom. A boy named Benjamin Harrison Howard jumped from a window but was saved by a bystander. No serious injuries reported and the loss is estimated at a few hundred dollars.
At the Georgia federation convention in Columbus a movement to ban silk petticoats was launched. A member cited the swish of silk garments causing rustle during sessions. a resolution to abandon them wasTABLED but may become a special order from the federation president.
About 200 Commercial club members met Saturday night to discuss city needs for the coming legislature. Judge Martindale urged the city own the water works, Dr Hurty pressed expanding state health board power, Williams favored nonpartisan water works control, and Day proposed extending compulsory education beyond 12 weeks.
The state board of agriculture will be reorganized with elections in districts 3 6 8 9 10 11 12 and 13. Candidates are plentiful and it is unlikely a bill will be introduced to make the board a state institution as the plan appears to have died.
Ralph Lemcke son of ex-Treasurer Lemecke had a successful appendicitis operation at St. Vincent's hospital on Saturday. A few months earlier a brother of Lemcke died from an operation for the same disease.
Officials deny any accident on the Monon road near Fall Creek. The report of a wreck is without foundation and no incident has occurred there or elsewhere on the line.

The Daddy of Snakes Co announces a display of the 12 foot 8 inch rattlesnake hide killed near Auburn Illinois by Frank Williams on Sept 3. The skin measures 12 inches wide with an eight inch trimmed length. The reptile is claimed to be the largest since 1876, possibly paired with a 16 foot specimen from 1836.
London reports Maj Laurie famed for a helmet spider mascot during the Soucanese campaign with Kitchener. He survived battles at Al Bara and Obdurman unscathed, and a returning helmet contained a lively spider. On his wedding day the bride’s mother gave a diamond spider in tribute to the tale.
Washington rulings arrive at the local office detailing tax treatments for liquor added to drinks, contract deeds, chancery deeds, time checks, pool table licenses, lectures with music, chemistry demonstrations, wholesale sales thresholds, bank withdrawals, and checks payable to self. Omaha report says Senator William V. Allen and Col. William Jennings Bryan, once close friends, have divided. The split centers on Nebraska’s Republican legislature and Allen’s possible retirement. Allen supporters claim Bryan aided his defeat to block a rival for 1900. Bryan’s supporters deny the claim.
D J Harris of Niles Michigan is jailed in Vandalia on an accusation of attempted murder of his 10 year old son. The boy failed a spelling test and Harris allegedly hanged him from a rafter before neighbors arrived and cut him down.
Prohis report 115 votes gained in Indianapolis and over 6 000 statewide with Indiana totals rising from 3 056 in 184 to 9 961 in the latest election. Widespread celebratory plans include a New York and Alabama Streets hall gathering and an illustrated address in Plymouth Church. A Prohi official, William Rawlings, serves Parke County treasurer on a fusion ticket.
The Retal clerks' union met Sunday to oppose merchants keeping open late to attract soldiers, forming a committee to target offending shops. By Monday morning, merchants reportedly agreed to close at ten o'clock.
