Prisoners Camp Proves Success At Lewis County Site
Washington’s first convict camp using prison labor for road material runs at Menkill Lewis county on the Northern Pacific line. Convicts work without striped garb amid forests and cascades, supervised by guards. initial operations began Sept 18 with rock crushing advancing as car shortages threaten throughput. County officials say the project costs stem from transportation limits, but one carload of material has already gone to Chehalis for city streets.
