New York reports Hamburgh American Line manager Mr Boas says the wrecked steamer Patria carried about 10 000 tons of cargo worth 1 000 000 and the vessel valued at 700 000. Built at Stettin in 1894 she ran aground on her first New York voyage in February 1895 near Sandy Hook.
Albert J Burris, 3, formerly of 926 N Illinois St, was arrested in Terre Haute on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses after selling soap with promises of premiums. He was bound over for trial, and is also wanted in Danville Illinois for a diamond robbery. He was arrested under the alias of James Williams. Harris' wife lives at 926 N F H, but they have not lived together since last May. He was a canvasser when he wed here. Mrs Burris says she left him due to his conduct.
Major Taylor chipped another world record by riding a mile in 1 minute 19 seconds, beating McLuffie's mark by two seconds. He was paced by a two-motor cycle with wind shields under favorable weather as L A W officials observed and will approve the record.
