Dr. R J Aley retiring superintendent of public instruction was honored by his class of 106 men from the Third Christian church with a gold watch and chain. He leaves Indianapolis on November 18 for Washington then proceeds to Orono Maine to assume the presidency of the University of Maine.
Nashville, Tenn. Nov 10. Capt B W Hooper, foundling raised in an orphan asylum, adopted by Dr W H W Hooper of Newport, and educated in Jefferson City public schools, has won a Republican victory to become Tennessee’s governor. A lawyer and former legislator, he served in the Spanish American War and inherits a fortune from his adopted father. He declared pride in attracting attention from distinguished politicians to a so-called groundling.
New York November 10 unions for coal firms joined express drivers strike. Fifty wagons were left by one company. The international brotherhood plans a mass meeting to decide on a general strike possibly involving 40000 drivers. State Labor Commissioner Williams may compel arbitration. police seized three wagons and 900 officers were deployed.
