Zephyr in Brown county Texas faces terror and ruin after a tornado. Forty are dead with six dying and six missing, as the number of fatalities may reach sixty. Homes destroyed, telegraph lines down, relief parties organized to reach Brownwood for medical aid. Numerous victims named among dead and injured.
Indianapolis started strong in Columbus on May 31, scoring two runs in the first inning while the Senators were held. Manager Carr started Graham against Columbus, Nelson for Columbus. Indianapolis added four more in the second inning as Howley caught and Slugger James played for Columbus. No scoring in the third.
Manager Overpack secures Ward Baker, once a street violinist, for a week's run under R. E. Jonston. McCarver and Robinson debut a new vaudeville comedy act that has wowed larger houses this season. Cecil Gordon performs new songs and dances. Four motion pictures, new to Indianapolis, headline the bill.
George Albert Merkell, 43, died at St. Vincent's hospital after being crushed under a Big Four excursion train at Veedersburg Indiana. He was en route from Peoria to Cincinnati to meet his five month old baby. His wife and four children arrived at the hospital after his death.
Frank Lohrmann, a 24 year employee of A Kiefer Drug Co as shipping clerk, fell from a streetcar on Virginia avenue at the foot of a viaduct Saturday night and died en route to City hospital. He leaves a widow and 11 children, residing at 435 Gray Street. skull fracture reported.
Hugo Friedman a 45 year old traveling man from Baltimore died by hanging in a hotel room at Claypool field on Sunday. Coroner Blackwell noted a May 25 telegram from Standard Overall ordering him to report at the house. He had no funds and recent business reverses were cited as the motive.
Dr Edgar F Kiser resigns as superintendent of the city dispensary due to the merger with Bobbs Free dispensary. Dr J Preston Christie will serve temporarily as successor. The city dispensary moves from its present location to the Bobbs dispensary on June 1.
Paul C. Gall and Harry C. Prinzler, both bound over to the federal grand jury on $5,000 bonds, are charged with conspiring with Max P. Emmerich to defraud Capital National Bank. Prinzler, described as 28 and living at 331 E North, says Emmerich used him as a dummy and opened an account for him in 1908. Emmerich fled after falsifying about $10,000 in books.
A liberal reward is offered for information leading to the recovery of documents and biographical writings about Napoleon the Great. They were in the possession of Col. John J. Lehmanowsky at his death near Sellersburg Indiana around 1856. Lehmanowsky was an aide to Napoleon and spent later life in Indiana with ties to Centerville Corydon Baysville Knightstown and Louisville Springfield Cincinnati. The reward comes from relative L L Hil of New York City.
Matthew Brown attempted self harm by cutting his throat on Monday morning while working at William Dell's farm two miles west of the city on W Morris Street. Bicycle officers Wilson and Delane of the Third precinct brought him to the central police station where he will be held pending an insanity inquest.
