Off Manzanilla on May 31 the Colima was driven onto a coral reef in a wind storm. Captain Taylor and the first pilot and engineer were killed by a falling mast. The ship sank in 480 fathoms of water. The San Juan rescued 46 survivors after twenty hours, with 108 total fatalities.
In a tense Clerk of Court scene William Linder and his lawyers pressed for a bond delay as judgment on divorce fees nears. Sarah Hall’s sworn assets are questioned by Judge Walker’s concerns, while McCullough and Claypool trade sharp jabs about property and reputations amid stalled lower court action and a supreme court hold.
A light turnout due to heat accompanied a program of addresses and patriotic songs. C K Merrifield led a stirring song "Flag." Mrs. B M Lawrence read an original poem "Our silent actors." The funeral train bearing the late Secretary Gresham arrived at Woodlawn station at 2 05 pm and the cortege moved to Oakwood cemetery. President Cleveland stood with bowed head as taps sounded. Gov Matthews recalled Chicago crowds and Roby rumors. A bench and bar meeting in Indianapolis honored Gresham with moving reminiscences and solemn resolutions.
Jd B Patten head of the prison south announces plans to resign by January 1 next at latest. He cites personal dislike for the job and health rumors while noting no riches or glory from the position and expects to settle in Indianapolis after leaving office.
Jos. Rice vice president of the Cincinnati Duckworth club at the Grand hotel predicts Bushnell as a soft mark and names several Democratic contenders, while Claude Matthews is proposed for endorsement. A local restaurateur predicts Theodore Wagner will become mayor, supported across parties and city demographics.
Jackson Kentucky May 31 Bad Tom Smith famed for eight murders arson and robberies was hanged here for the killing of Dr J H Rader. The desperado led the French Eversole feud and ambushed victims including Joe Eversole Nicholas Combs Shade Combs and Robin Cornett. He lived with Mrs Katherine McQuinn and plotted Rader's death after luring him to Quicksand Creek area. Smith and McQuinn were captured. Smith sentenced to death and McQuinn to life imprisonment.
Marion county clubs organizer Mr. Warwick Ripley discusses campaign readiness and civil service reform. He predicts Trusler may be nominated despite formidable opposition and notes concerns about his voting record and stance on civil service. He cites ward 15 Republican club backing Trusler and opposition to the Lincoln league club.
W C Smith a longtime Eagle machine works associate and prominent merchant lies at death's door at 410 N Pennsylvania St. Attending physician Dr Runnels says dementia grips the aged man who last Thursday evening locked himself in his room and prayed through the night. His wife and daughter care for him as death nears.
Logan Ohio May 31 Nelson Feather aged 50 arrested on charge of attempting to assault a 10 year old girl on his Laurelton farm. Taken from jail Thursday night and lynched. Body riddled with bullets. Described as rough and uncultured. He left a wife and six married daughters.
Captain Campbell watched a parade Friday morning as a large elephant spouted water from its trunk into the street, provoking ire. The event interrupted the procession, while Cronacher of Ironton Ohio remains missing after Friday night disappearance, with his brother continuing the search in Indianapolis.
A poetry contest attracted 472 entries with prizes of 5 3 2 dollars. Mary Hackett Flanner won first for Jones Experience, Clara Mills took second, and Mrs W F Smith third. Mrs Flanner’s poem is published here with the note that the contest reflected wide readership of Tax Sun. A dynamite blast leveled the Joseph Faber house near Slate Cut, injuring Mrs Faber fatally.

Judge Brown voided the 300000 mortgage by Premier Steel Works to Chicago bank as trustee. The suit, brought by Receiver McGettigan, alleged fraud by delaying recording and insolvency awareness. Plaintiffs claim fraud harmed lenders Southwell and others. case will go to the supreme court.
The burial of Rabbi Sheresefsky followed his sudden Wednesday death at his home near Illinois and Norwood. The service at Sharah Tefella began at 10 30 Friday, with ten pallbearers carrying the coffin to the synagogue. He was buried at the Jewish cemetery as the vault was not yet complete, and a $500 subscription was noted for the penniless family. Mrs. Sheresefsky remains in a demented state, aided by six grieving ladies.
Officer Curran nabbed a poorly dressed man trying doors on W Washington St. He was jailed for vagrancy and identified as Mark Killoran from Boston. In court he claimed canvassing past, received a bed dime, and the judge mocked his Boston accent, offering five dollars for vagrancy.
May 1 reports indicate Hone Kone announces the start of hostilities with Japan opening bombardment of Kee Lung in Formosa. The Japanese fleet, thought to be near Tameui, is believed to be carrying out the bombardment.
In Pineville Kentucky on May 31 a long standing land fight culminated when Geo Taylor Jim Taylor John Arnt and Sarah Griffith trapped and shot dead Long John Helton and wounded Jim Belcher and Chas Johnson. The ambush occurred after a dispute over property rights and ended with fatalities and injuries among local figures.
The good citizens leagues of the state plan a grand union and love feast in Indianapolis around September 1 with all Indiana leagues invited. The gathering aims to harmonize the groups though reports say a mayoral candidate may be chosen, which Capt. Ritter denies.
