Officials announced a brief pause in gambling enforcement over several days. Capt Hyland and Supt Taffe issued reminders Wednesday night that no arrests would be made. Despite orders, gambling persisted Thursday night and police did not act, with Taffe later saying no action would occur for days.
A conservative preview shows Democrats struggling to fill state ticket slots ahead of the June 4 convention. Names floated include Adam Heimberger for secretary of state and Jerome Jerfr for auditor, with battles expected for attorney general and supreme court, while committee members express optimism a strong ticket can be assembled despite vacancies and late entries.

Albert C Ferguson named chief plumbing inspector in city engineer's department and has served in that role for months. Company A Pythian Guards plan to travel to Detroit Sunday to establish a company. Memorial Day observances planned at the Seventh-day Adventist church Sunday morning.
The Park board debated the telephone wire issue with Supt Power and City leaders to restrain tree cutting. It also considered what to do with Riverside park adjacent condemned property as owners urge action or withdrawal. No decision was made. The board deemed park band costs reasonable at 51 dollars per Sunday and 102 dollars for the two groups.
Judge Simon P. Thompson of Jasper county presided over a dispute involving a ditch he has a personal interest in. The wrangle with county commissioners led to a trial in his court before a special judge, who upheld the commissioners on demurrer, after which Thompson appointed another judge who ruled for the commissioners.
A Friday meeting drew anxious remonstrators who urged the Board of Works not to resurface Shelby Street with asphalt. The board said it would consider the demand and also weigh a potential improvement past the market house after receiving a notice from its own assessment bureau to appear and protest if it objected to the plan.
Hyde and June recently took charge of the Fair view restaurant and hosted a fine picnic dinner for 50 guests. A special car conveyed the Maryland and Illinois-sts. editorial forces to the park at 5 p.m. Thursday for a day of riding on the merry-go-round boating fishing and general good times for all attendees.

Business agent Collins of the machinists union fears a strike of the Big Four machinists, following the company's refusal to grant the requested wage increase. The conference with Manager Schaff and Motive Power Garstang ended in bad humor after being adjourned to July 25 for a meeting with President Ingalls.
Jeffersonville Indiana May 2 Spl The smallpox outbreak at the reform school has led the health board to reject full quarantine and instead keep inmates inside, with workers allowed out after changing clothes. About 50 cases have appeared, with no deaths. May reports show 23 new cases and a trend toward decline. No paroles have been granted since the outbreak began.
Delegates to the millers convention were late Friday morning after a Thursday night entertainment at the German house. G. L. Teller of the Columbia food laboratories in Chicago spoke on wheat and flour tests. Friday afternoon featured Dr. Edward Gudeman on corn products and officer elections, with plans to visit Fairbank in the evening.
In Lansing Texas on May 23 a mob captured Dudley Morgan and burned him at an iron stake for the murder of Mrs. McKay. She identified him. he confessed and prayed as pine timbers and fire consumed his body within minutes. At least four thousand people witnessed the atrocity, many women, while Morgan implicated another man, Frank Heard, who is in jail in Marshall.

A pet sparrow that sheltered at Deschier Lemcke cigar store vanished after two days of sheltering near the door. It was returned to the sidewalk, then allowed back in, but disappeared Thursday afternoon possibly fleeing humans or falling to a prowling cat.
County health officer Dr Ridpath quizzed a Joshua Collins family dog amid a quarantine scare. The Collins son shows the worst smallpox seen, the mother died untreated, and the car stayed healthy and tied in the yard. The Samuel Kent household quarantine, after an infant death, will be raised next week.
Wilkes Barre May 23 President Mitchell will leave Saturday for Indianapolis and not return for several days It is understood the call for a national convention of hard and soft coal miners will be held in abeyance until Mitchell returns to the capital.
Wilkes Barre Pa May 28 It is stated that coal strike leaders are willing to submit the dispute to arbitration by the National Civic Federation claiming it as the quickest path to victory. Paris reports 10,000 Martinique residents booked to sail to Versailles as the Privy Council declines total evacuation. A cable from acting governor M. L Heuvre says no new deaths and that evacuation is not justified. National memorial services for Martinique dead were held at Notre Dame, the solemn spectacle since Faure’s funeral.
Attorney O B Orton and Judge Gooding of Indianapolis and Greenfield led an hour long police court dispute over a boy charged with stealing an umbrella. The exchange featured sharp sarcasm and digs on legal method as Judge Stubbs finally discharged the youth.
Charles Martindale, republican candidate for joint senator from Marion and Morgan counties, fights the Bookwalter Woods machine, threatening to oppose Mayor Bookwalter at every turn and to build an anti Bookwalter faction. The machine splits over legislative picks with Whittcomb backing Kealing Cox and Reagan minor lights. Martindale unavailable for comment.
The shippers committee appointed to secure freight service for Indianapolis won its battle. James L. Keach and Charlies W. Maguire conferred with the mayor, and a car for Indianapolis with a schedule is being prepared. Indianapolis will get the same freight service as other cities along the line, and will be treated equally. They left the mayor's office arm in arm. Cara running about a week.
Cincinnati reports two freight trains collided in Little Miami and B and O lines. Engineer William Keating, 24, recently married, died.
