In a Davis Street home, 20 year old Wiley Taylor was shot by Claude Sanders, 19, who intended no harm though claiming to be Deadwood Dick. The bullet entered near the ear and the brain, causing Taylor’s death Sunday evening after a police report and post mortem noting an unusual bullet path. Sanders surrendered, declaring the incident accidental. The two men had been at James Reach’s commission house at 8 Delaware Street when the gun discharged during a conversation about novels. The Willett Point New York pair eloped December 13 and carried a child belonging to Mr Denison a wealthy Willett Point farmer. Detectives pursued them from Willett Point to Anderson where they were captured. Matthews had a marriage license with Anna Pritchett issued last November. The couple were short of money with only ten cents in the treasury and walked from this city to Anderson with the child. The original Mrs Matthews was expected here Monday afternoon.
