A gardener named James Collingsworth recounts being buried alive after a fever left him unconscious. Medical students later retrieved him from a grave to a college dissecting room where a galvanic shock restored life as doctors performed the first incision.
Capt James B Fritz of Gosport Indiana, a Democrat and early enlistee, initially faced resignation after Corperal Tanner took charge of the pension bureau. Tanner learned Fritz was a soldier and valuable, offering field work as special examiner. Fritz chose Chicago and remains in government service.
In Akron, Arthur Frazier, visiting Edward Howe, wrestled with Howe’s wife who had boasted of tossing all challengers. After a brief struggle she threw him, and he died immediately, believed to have ruptured an artery. In Pittsburg, Matt Quay is reported to be a candidate for governor next year amid weather notes.
Memorial day events in Indianapolis include a Crown Hill cemetery service and a parade organized by the G A R with four divisions. Gov. Hovey will preside, a monument to unknown dead unveiled by Gen. Lima Ohio May 21 George H Allen a prominent society figure vanished on the eve of his wedding to Mary Hale causing shock. Miss Hale is prostrated by the sudden disappearance and friends are left in a dilemma. In Cincinnati iron and coal workers face a market collapse with nails and prices plunging as producers promise further cuts.
Rufus T. Larkin as administrator of Syl vanus Milner’s estate sued John H. Sullivan and his bondsmen Saturday for a 2500 judgment paid into Sullivan’s control and diverted to his pockets. The sum arose from a life insurance policy.
In two weeks there were eleven self inflicted death attempts nine by morphine. John Shea aged 50 recovered after dispensary doctors flushed morphine from his system. Dr Woodburn warns publicizing crises may spur copycat acts and urges pharmacist prescription controls and poison restrictions to prevent poison sales.
