Coroner H A Marchand opened an inquiry into the Canton Ohio American Sheet and Tin Plate boiler explosion at the steel trust plant. Fourteen workers were killed and 30 injured as boilers 1 2 and 3 failed, with wreckage hurled across yards and into homes. The plant has long operated as an emergency mill with disputed boiler safety. John N. Carey declined to have his name placed before the Marion county Republican primary urged by the Business Men's association. The group noted four men, all having declined, would not enter long campaigns yet touted other qualified candidates from professions and business to represent Marion county in the legislature. Leaders said petitions already filed include diverse professionals and industrial interests. Carey’s withdrawal removes potential internal strife, while Will H. Brown Harold Hibben Jr and Winfield Miller also exited the race.
Mrs. Weasley Wright and Mrs. Gena Heath and six children drowned when their wagon tried to cross the Gossattot river in darkness. The river was out of its banks Tuesday evening near Gilham Arkansas.
President Taft railed at insurgent Republican senators calling them cowards and lunkheads at the White House in the presence of senators and reporters. He denounced their refusal to confer on the railway bill, a scene likened to a barroom. The insurgents rejected requests to meet Taft through Aldrich and Crane.
President Taft sent word to the senate via Aldrich, Crane and Root denying circulating reports that he cursed insurgents during conversations with regular senators and reporters. He said the stories aimed to widen factional splits in the Republican ranks and blamed railroads for fear of a railroad bill harming their interests.
The 4H. Lauter company, furniture manufacturers, won approval Tuesday to construct a $48,000 addition to its plant at Harding and West Washington streets, extending facilities and capacity.
Washington May 18 reports allege George W Perkins of J P Morgan Co financed Taft’s 1908 campaign through early 1908 and the steel trust later funded hitchcock’s campaign apparatus. Ballinger Pinchot hearings may summon Perkins to testify on Alaska plans and Ballinger relations. Kerby’s testimony contrasted sharply with Lawler’s fiery outbursts about conspirators.

Henry Bond, who lost his nose in a kitchen fight with Henry Dance, appeared in police court wearing a nose grafted from his leg. Bond, hospitalized for a month, had the skin transplanted by surgeons. Dance was bound over to the grand jury by Judge Collins under $1,000 bond on a charge of assault and battery with intent to kill.
Westminster Hall opened to a two mile queue as over 100000 mourners filed past the bier of Edward VII in state. Americans joined the long line and crowds mixed across classes, with calm police presence and a solemn tribute marked by prayers and tears. The day featured King George's message praising Tuesday's ceremony and the quiet dignity of the tribute.
At Windsor on May 20 the funeral procession for King Edward will feature a large showing of European monarchs and royalty. Emperors and kings including Wilhelm II of Germany, Frederick VII of Denmark, Haakon VII of Norway, Alfonso XIII of Spain, Albert of Belgium, and George of Greece will attend. Various royal relatives through blood and marriage will be present, with Austria-Hungary’s Franz Joseph represented by Archduke Ferdinand and Russia by Grand Duke Michael. Charles F. Williams, wealthy producer, who filed for divorce from his wife naming a Philadelphia osteopath as respondent, announced in Pittsburgh on May 18 that they had kissed and made up after 26 years together and he would withdraw the suit immediately.
In Albany on May 18 the New York Senate approved the Davenport resolution by a 26 to 20 vote, placing the state on record in favor of the income tax amendment to the federal constitution.
