Admiral Sampson's squadron engages Morro castle in San Juan Porto Rico with the battleships Indiana Iowa New York and Detroit along with monitors and cruisers. Fire ceases after three hours as Morro falls and the town surrenders with heavy life losses reported ashore.
May 13 Key West reports Cardenas capitulated after heavy bombardment on Thursday. The Winslow and crew fate cited, Wilmington reinforced by Puritan, 400 boats burned, arsenals exploded, landing party seized papers from Spanish commandant. city described as a total wreck with nothing standing.
United States Company E of the First Regiment under Capt. Dorst landed at Punta Frias and routed the Spanish garrison. One officer and three soldiers were killed. American casualty C Archibald of San Francisco wounded in the arm. About 100 Spaniards ambushed were driven off after a 20 minute shelling by convoy gunboats Manning and Wasp.
