In Camleton Indiana on May 12 the trial of Charles Cannon, a colored man, and Al Graves for the murder of John Bryant seven years ago begins. Graves, a prominent young farmer, was arrested at the time but released. Cannon is charged with complicity. The arrests occurred about three months ago.

A Baltimore and Ohio freight wreck near Jersey Switch in Chattanooga on May 12 killed four men and injured engineer Gregory. Fireman John Bailey and brakemen Scott Price and Alf Harris died at once, white brakeman J M Clifford died later, and others feared buried as recovery continued.

At Brighton Beach Park on Monday Beck defeated Fred Erb in the sweepstakes and championship shoots. The match began with Gay winning the opening sweepstakes shoot and the great contest followed with Beck prevailing in the championship.
A funnel shaped storm struck the southern outskirts of the city on Saturday night causing widespread devastation. One hundred houses were swept away and many injured or killed as telegraph lines and electric wires were blown down. The same funnel shaped cloud moved to Franklin Pennsylvania, killing two and injuring many before wrecking more buildings. The event included a cloud burst and heavy rain with animals killed by debris and live wires.
A San Francisco dispatch reports the schooner Eliza Mary wrecked near the New Hebrides. Of 79 aboard including crew passengers and laborers, 28 drowned and 25 were killed and eaten by cannibals. The event followed news of the sea disaster and related items from Cincinnati and New York.
