Three men from Brazil John A Powers Daniel Brown and Robert Rivers are suspected of aiding in coin production. They met in Brazil with John A Howe of Noblesville Indiana who passed a counterfeit silver half dollar to obtain a lunch for the group. Howe alerted a US commissioner and the men were arrested. Powers says he is from Forest House Illinois and recently left St. Louis where he was in hospital. Brown and Rivers offer no comment. The US grand jury will question them Monday. A veneer dry house owned by William son & Adams burned Sunday night along with one dwelling and a dozen others damaged. May 9. Officer Pifer of Lancaster attempted to arrest an unknown horse thief who resisted. The suspect was shot in the neck and died at the scene.
Judge Peter Mitchell of the first judicial court died Monday in New York. He was buried by the state in Paris on May. In another note, Hammond the printer was killed by anarchists and buried by the state on Monday.
In Washington May 9 Mr Pierce of Tennessee pushes signatures for a cloture rule on the free coinage silver bill and hopes for House and Senate passage amid Democratic support. Senator Kyle backs success for the House petition and Senate fate with 44 senators pledged and a few doubtful. The Maverick bank failure inquiry is requested in Boston. The commerce committee supports a shipbuilding bill granting foreign vessels American registry, while Mills opposes it. In the House the river and harbor bill passes 186 to 65.
Striking iron workers at the world’s fair grounds clashed with police Monday morning. About 9 o’clock they boarded a B&O train with 200 new men from Pittsburg and won over the crew to join the union, then tried to convert a Fort Wayne train carrying 200 others who refused to join. Four patrol wagons responded and several strikers were hurt. two were arrested. In View Yomn, pay cutters in the city strike 1500 strong in sympathy with quarrymen seeking higher pay, with similar action planned in Albany, Troy, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn.
