Mercer Pa May 6 The jury for James Boyle charged with kidnapping Willie Whitla of Sharon on March 18 last was completed last night and testimony began. The courtroom crowd surged to gain admission as the doors were kept locked after a brief rush. Boyle pleaded not guilty as the trial opened with opening statements by attorney T. C. Cochran.

White girl and negro infatuated elopement thwarted
Pearl Griffin a white girl and Charles McCullum a Black man were halted by Patrolmen McKinney and Dickson at Central avenue and Twenty-eighth street as they attempted to elope. Griffin, once imprisoned for petit larceny, was paroled after 13 months and worked for George M. Hawkins. McCullum, a coachman for Walter J. Goodall, carried Griffin’s baggage. Detectives found notes and Griffin denied love or elopement, though authorities say courtship had continued for some time. Griffin was returned to the Woman's prison. McCullum faced loitering charges.
