Admiral Dewey cabled from Manila Apr 30 stating Lieut Gilmore and part of his boat crew aboard the Yorktown are safe. Four men unaccounted for may have been killed during an insurgent attack. Gen Otis to pursue prisoner exchange to secure their return.
Washington reports cable from Manila dated May 1 stating Captain Rockefeller of the Ninth Infantry has been missing since May 28. He was last seen near Caloocan after visiting out posts at 9:30 p.m. efforts to locate him continued with no success. Private papers found on May 29 suggest possible capture or misdirection.
Sixteen prisoners are in Filipino hands near Manila including Lieut. Gilmore and ten Yorktown crew from Baler. Col. Arguelles, envoy of Gen. Luna, reports the captives to Gen. Otis. Gen. McArthur sends ten days rations and delicacies to the Filipino lines and writes Luna proposing a prisoner exchange.
The Oceania, a Spaniards’ paper in Vanila, May 1, notes General Juana as the most irreconcilable insurgent leader, calling his armistice proposal more significant than any other chiefs. It says the proposals clash with Filipino press statements.
