Vincennes residents are stirred by the death of pretty Mrs Culbertson found dying from poison in a shed. The case follows a string of threatening letters sent by a jealous rival, prompting a police inquiry and public speculation.
Mrs. Russell Culbertson died after being burned with acid and strangled in a woodshed behind her father in law Joshua Brazleton’s home in Vincennes. She alleged she was dragged to the shed and forced to drink acid. her jaws were tied and a skull and crossbones note found nearby. Three threatening letters are reported.
South Bend.'s Fred W. Springer is favored for chief examiner under the new public accounting law effective around April 10. Gov. Marshall will appoint and work with a board to select two deputies, one Republican, with competitive exams for traveling deputies split between parties. The governor has 60 days to choose the chief examiner and start building the agency, with no haste implied.
The police department has received a large four cylinder National touring car for emergency runs carrying seven passengers. Chief Metzger led the first trial trip Thursday and said the auto, with new substations and extra bicycle police, will enable more effective work. The old car goes to the Board of Public Works.
Judge Stubbs of juvenile court and Bros Stubbs plan a river trip to Louisiana next month to visit their son George W Stubbs Jr They will travel by boat on the Ohio River to New Orleans and then take a train to the son's home located 100 miles from New Orleans.
W. W. Ross of Evansville, editor of the Evansville Journal-News and a Republican trustee, resigns from the State School for the Deaf board after attacking Gov. Marshall's economy policy. Marshall will appoint a replacement before April 7, as Ross indicates the vacancy date.
Washington March 25. President Taft sent to the senate nominations for ambassador posts in Italy and Spain, minister to Argentina, and several U S judges in Pennsylvania Alaska and Puerto Rico. The senate confirmed Ormsby McHarg as assistant secretary of commerce and labor and named local officials for Williston North Dakota Taylorsville Illinois.
Auburn, March 25. Josephine Howland, a prominent suffrage leader and one of the women doctors invited to witness Mary Farmer's electrocution, refused the invitation declaring it a blot on the state and calling the condemned woman a brute. Other women physicians also declined.
Twelve men were chosen Thursday to serve on the jury for Fred Cassell charged with the murder of Myrtle Burnett, with whom he lived. The panel includes John W. Culliper Clyde Lowes Albert M. Roberts John C. Baird Ralph Copeland George Tompkins W. H. Avey Milton Powell Los Rees Keffer Herman Branson and D. N. Julian.
Eight men are reported dead with two dying and several injured after a 40 foot wall collapse at Swift & Co battering plant in Chicago's Union Stockyards. Three bodies have been recovered.

Mrs John Ward and infant grandson of Ambassador Reid improving in London. Berlin hints Chancellor Buelow may resign. Calcutta reports raid on Tochet valley post repulsed with no British casualties. Manila street railway strike leaders call off amid city business interests.
George N. Bell of Swainsboro former state lawmaker committed suicide on a Central Georgia train by slitting his throat with a pocket knife borrowed from a fellow passenger. He had been released recently from the state insane asylum after hearings challenging his commitment. Bell was aided in his release by Blanche Burton, a former actress now married to a wealthy Indianapolis man whom Bell had befriended.
In Rome the accidental discovery of two bombs hidden in the Aurelian wall near Porta Fa Lorenzo revealed an anarchist plot to assassinate Victor Emmanuel at parliament opening. A group of boys playing nearby found the devices and three bombs later exploded injuring two youths.
Elam H. Neal, collector of internal revenue in the sixth district, says he is not seeking promotion. He has been mentioned as a possible successor to Col. John C. Capers as commissioner of internal revenue. Neal praises Capers and says no promotion has been offered to him. Supporters say Neal could energize the office and aid Taft administration with information from 66 collectors.
James Stamm aged 61 and his wife 60 appeared in police court after he struck her leaving a black eye. Judge Whitallon let Stamm go without a fine and warned him not to return or face the workhouse. The couple from 1219 W Market street argued over their son after a period of drinking hot toddy.
Charles T. Hanna was chosen judge in the circuit court by agreement Thursday in the case of Maggie Hoyt suing Indianapolis Gas for damages. Hoyt alleges a company employee left a trapdoor open at her home causing her injury. Hanna's selection allows Judge Remster time to prepare his opinion.
Cleveland reports expose James Boyle and his wife indicted for blackmail related to the Willie Whitla kidnapping. Extradition papers signed by Gov. Stuart prompt transfer from Ohio to Sharon Pennsylvania for trial. Police also note admission by Boyle’s wife and identify Boyle by a school kidnapping. A death by morphine overdose near the scene is linked to an associate.
Harry Owens, linked with Harry Doty and George Miller in a South-side saloon robbery, appeared before Judge Stubbs. Owens did not enter the building and his judgment was withheld. His employer offered to take him back and employ him while Doty and Miller face murder charges in Mrs Nichols case.
A city commission bearing the seal of Washington was received by Chief of Police Metzger for Capt. Adolph Asche and Detective Jacob Kurtz. The two officers were assigned to Washington during the inaugural ceremonies and the commissions include pictures of President Taft and Vice President Sherman.
Miss Matilda Coombs, who four months ago ran away from home with a man named Joseph Tschman, killed herself with poison in Milwaukee. She left a letter accusing the man of betraying her, saying the shame of the experience drove her to suicide.
In Irvington, parents complained cigarette sales to schoolboys persisted. Judge George W. Stubbs, in juvenile court, lectured Theodore F. Weesner and two clerks, warning tobacco sales to minors must cease. He explained amendments to the tobacco act now impose stricter penalties and enforcement will continue.
A. C. Alexander chief deputy in the Indiana treasurer's office expresses delight and strong favorable impression with Oklahoma in letters to friends. He may relocate permanently to the southwestern state which has captured his affections.
Mayor Bookwalter revoked the saloon license of Louis Simon at 518 Indiana Avenue on Thursday. Police raids in the past month found two gambling games at the saloon and Lieutenant Sandmann had previously arrested 14 African American loiterers there.
Catcher Monte Beville, formerly of Milwaukee, joins Rochester in the Eastern League. Bevillé believes he will adapt quickly and prove valuable for the Rochester club.
