The railroad lobby successfully pressed to weaken and pare down an anti subsidy bill. Lawmakers rejected stronger measures as committees altered the proposal, leaving the stronger provisions ineffective and the public safety aim undermined.
A legislative move to block two subsidy elections for the same railroad in a township was rejected after committees sought to tighten wording. The proposal would have prevented back to back votes on the same subsidy, but the bill died with its enacting clause left pending.
The Indiana senate reconsiders the sale of Beautiful St Clair Park and votes 28 to 17 to retain the park. Debates accuse Indianapolis of prejudice while leaders urge common sense, noting the land around the deaf and dumb asylum may still be sold if the bill passes.
The Board of Safety reviews bids for a fire alarm system and has heard nothing new from Gamewell on cost for specified features. They doubt Chicago’s Municipal Lighting Co. could fulfill the contract if awarded. Officials reject the Chicago firm’s attempt to claim the request for extra figures as a new bid.
John I Patterson a longtime Indianapolis figure born in 1828 near Georgetown Kentucky is critically ill at his home 7 North Liberty Street. A carpenter by trade he moved to Indiana as a child and resided in Indianapolis since the 1840s. He enjoyed planting trees in Meridian and Delaware streets and was active in Roberts Park M E church and the Order of Chosen Friends. His wife was Clements Champine.
Mrs Murphy known as the monkey balloonist fell in front of a Vandalia train near Union Station on Saturday at 1 p m. The engineer stopped the train just in time. She then walked to a coach and shook hands with amused passengers.
The county treasurer disbursed twenty five thousand dollars to police and firemen on Friday and docked 409 dollars from their pay for delinquent back taxes.
The council committee on public safety and comfort discussed the plumbing ordinance Friday night with minor changes urged by W. J. Freaney and N. T. Hudson.
