Porter Charlton, who confessed to murdering his wife Mary Scott Castle Charlton at Lake Como, Italy, plans an insanity defense with a top law firm. Hearing postponed. his father argues mental incapacity and requests asylum.
The House adopted the conference report on parole reform for federal prisoners, allowing parole after one third of sentence for inmates who follow institution rules. The measure targeted Charles W. Morse and John R. Walsh. The bill now goes to President Taft for approval.
Rome reports not seeking Charlton extradition but promises to assist in his conviction in the United States. While the foreign office denied a request for extradition, it was learned an attempt may be made to bring Porter Charlton to Italy. The Justice Department aims to try Charlton in Como during the week of August 1.
From Roanoke Virginia on June 24 Samuel Lucas was killed in an ambush in the sight of his wife by five men who are in custody. Ellis Gould admits the killing grew from a sawmill deal.
Frelig Hansing, a 70 year old man at 515 South Delaware street, has endured 126 days and 18 weeks with no sleep. He sits with a briar pipe, eats little, and watches day turn to night hoping for rest, while doctors diagnose stomach and liver trouble as the cause and sleep aids fail.
In Jersey City on Friday morning a large Public Service car barn burned destroying the structure and causing about 50 000 in damage. Sixty men sleeping inside escaped with their lives as four firemen were crushed by a falling wall but others fled before collapse.
Nine of ten men refuse to remove hats in the common elevator at the Indiana Pythian Building as women enter. Elevator operator Leonard Christ notes frequent collisions and hat damage, while Tellknap at the county courthouse reports many men cling to headgear even with female passengers aboard.
The Interstate Commerce Commission rules Alaska has no territorial status for regulation. The Morgan Guggenheim railroad and ship lines in Alaska are relieved from ICC supervision due to Congress not establishing a territorial government. The decision, four to three, notes Alaska is a district, not a U.S. territory, with Commissioners Clements Cockrell Lane dissenting.

Dr. Edwin J. Richardson, formerly of Indianapolis, died in Washington on Thursday. He served as deputy coroner here, was a four year orderly in the First Ohio infantry, and fought in Ohio Tennessee and Mississippi. He was wounded and captured in the battle of Santa Lucia. He later taught near Urbana Ohio and practiced medicine in Indianapolis. He was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and a member of the K P lodge.
About 1,500 master Masons gathered in Brazil Indiana for the dedication of a newly completed 40000 dollar Masonic temple. Grand officers conducted the dedicatory ceremony and a parade featuring commanderies and visiting lodges accompanied the afternoon event.
The Indianapolis stores will close at 5 oclock each evening after July 5 to ease summer fatigue for workers. The public is urged to shop in the mornings and allow clerks a cooler, calmer day. Supt Hyland and officers Rowland and Tripp pursued Ralph Lee 16 after he shot a watchman at Edinburg. Evansville residents mourn as 24 year old Joseph Ehradt drowns after being caught by a circle of swimmer friends. Twelve companions swam nearby unaware of his death as searchers dug four hours to recover the body from the mill pond.
Wabash Ind June 24 Miss Viola Thompson told the county clerk she was a loafer when asked for her occupation on the marriage license form for her marriage to Daniel Oren Scott. She stood by the reply stating she knew of nothing to alter it.
In Ft Wayne on June 24 the Convention of group 1 of the Indiana Bankers association reported widespread optimism. Bankers expressed confidence in national prosperity and highlighted Indiana as especially favorable.
John White, 24, was jailed after choking his mother in Windfall Indiana. He demanded money, seized her by the throat and loosened grip only as she grew helpless, according to charges.
Pittsburg June 24 Congressman Dalzell has won his election fight as a temporary injunction restraining a recount in 68 districts was made permanent. The fraud charges raised by Dr. R J Black, Dalzell’s rival for the Republican nomination, cannot be investigated.
