An aerial ascent above the Union stockyards ends with the balloon losing its tether. The car plunges toward the earth and the passenger is hurled but escapes serious injury as the balloon and crew narrowly avoid disaster. Spectators witness a dramatic near catastrophe and the balloon outfit faces possible liability.
Reports say the imposter who collected delinquent taxes at the South side treasurer's office was frightened away by news. He reportedly warned to return in a few days but did not, and detectives watched for him with no trace found. The police have no current lead.
John VanNote, a Danville life insurance agent, ran a long talking sales pitch on Parks Martin, state tax commissioner and former Ladoga acquaintance.
