Manila report notes Gen Wheaton led a pursuing force after a recon party engaged near Perez Dasmarinas. Five Americans killed and 20 wounded as natives attacked along a five mile running fight south of Imus before they fell back toward Perez Dasmarinas. Ed L. Keen reports.
Washington reports from the surgeon general deny wholesale prostrations of troops in the Philippines. On average 7 percent are under care, with four hospitals totaling 1800 beds and 339 beds occupied by Filipinos. Medical officers say heat collapse claims are false or brief and do not produce mass hospital stays.
Ralph Martin of Manila writes from Cavite about heavy losses and disease among troops. He singles out Gen Lawton for his success and bold movements, claiming his presence might have prevented earlier trouble and noting his prowess in seizing fortresses and trenches.
Gen Otis reports Sherman arrived Monday morning in Manila. Casualties include Edwin L Gavette of Company I Sixth Infantry. Col Kellogg and 12 men left Honolulu sick. seventeen typhoid cases en route. Sixth Infantry sails to Iloilo to relieve Californians. transport Indiana discharges sick and sails to San Francisco. Troops from Nebraska Pennsylvania Utah Californians Colorado depart as ready. Otis notes volunteers wish mustering out at San Francisco.
The balance of the excursion trade favored Indianapolis on Sunday. Five excursion trains of 56 coaches departed Union station while seven trains of 8 coaches arrived. It marked the largest excursion business of the year.
Pat Ward a saloon keeper in West Washington Jr filed a damage demand before the Board of Works claiming electrolysis damaged gas pipes and required two repairs in a year. He sought city responsibility after the street car company refused to pay. Ward presented samples showing the pipe damage.
A clipped ad notes low prices on harness and horse gear at Vanderpool located on Meridian Street with a promotional line about dustless carts and a pro bono cigar offer as a quirky extra.
Chicago bishop William Ninde writes to Governor Mount defending him against sectarian bias accusations in an Indianapolis paper. He praises the governor for permitting Epworth League use of state house grounds and notes the controversy is ended.

The county board of tax reviewers met Monday with Assessor Joseph Boswell, Auditor Harry B. Smith, Treasurer Wm. H. Schmidt, Wm. Pollard and Albert Sahm. They employed Garber & Carpenter as stenographers to record proceedings. Boswell faltered during the oath to Garber, resigned, and Auditor Smith completed it neatly.
The Indiana State Board of Education adopted the committee report on third to fifth readers and awarded a five year contract to the Indiana School Book Company. Readers were revised under Prof Clarke of Chicago University. Former Supt Machan of LaGrange County met the board and was assured his regional seat remains unaffected by non reelection.
Attorney John B. Cockrum tried to pass through Sam Skillen's gate at Union Station without a ticket. Skillen refused entry and Cockrum grew agitated. Stationmaster Jack Lewis intervened to restore order after the incident Saturday evening.
Grounds of the German Lutheran Orphans' Home on East Washington Street hosted a Sunday anniversary with hundreds arriving by special trains from nearby towns. Morning and afternoon services were held and the institution netted about $800 from refreshments and collections.
Henry Wetzel and John J. Appel filed a city commissioned report on Indianapolis gas works. It estimates artificial gas cost 3.86 cents per 1,000 cubic feet from 1868 to 1899, and 68.62 cents for 1896 97, supporting the claim the company cannot sell at 75 cents. Official reports from Madrid say 4,000 rifles were seized at Arcachon destined for the Carlists. A Carlist source claims over 8,000 rifles have already entered the country.
A cablegram received by Gov. Mount from Beirut, Syria, expresses compliments of James Mount Nicely. The message marks the governor's second grandchild. Rev. Nicely serves as a missionary in Syria.
A fragment reports Broad Ripple motors hauling yellow and white trailers for Indianapolis firm’s lines on Sunday. Other notes mention public works plans to pave a section from Fall Creek Bridge to Thirty-fourth Street next year if the sewer is completed, and local residents delaying home construction due to gas company disconnections.
The United States pension agency has moved from the Union block on W Maryland Street to the Majestic building. The removal was completed Friday and Saturday. The new offices are light and roomy with lower temperatures than the old quarters. The agent and clerks express high satisfaction with the relocation.

In Atlanta Rev. L G Broughton of the Baptist Tabernacle urged city council to impeach Mayor Woodward after sensational claims about the mayor's private life. The audience cheered as the minister warned he would act if the council fails. In Eau Claire a cyclone sermon framed the disaster as Providence or unknown power.
H H Iddy Colorado insurance commissioner urges other states to join in persuading the government to curb using the mails for insurance. Auditor Hart of Indiana had submitted the issue to the post office department weeks earlier.

Mayor Jones of Toledo says he cannot grant personal aid amidst many letters. A Sunday blaze near Cleveland injured Mrs Jennie Price after she fell before an approaching train. her death seems likely. Marcy's place advertised watches and jewelry at low prices.
Twelve masked men robbed the Fairmount Park Transportation office in Philadelphia early Monday. They bound four employees with wire and jammed a jug in each mouth, pried open the safe, and fled with about $3,000. Police and detectives pursue the case as suspects vanish.
Mrs. Emily Redmond 29 wife of wealthy Frank Redmond fled elopement with nephew Charles Redmond. When Frank and Emily confronted them the nephew arrived and was fired upon as he fled. both shots missed. The couple then left for St. Louis.

About 1500 Knights of Pythias marched through downtown Indianapolis on Memorial Day Sunday. Lodges from Noblesville to Bloomington participated in exercises at Tomlinson Hall with ex Mayor John Caven and Grand Chancellor McCardle in attendance and Rev William A Quayle delivering the address.
Thomas J. Landers, 26, vice-president of a local Indianapolis printing company, died Saturday evening of consumption at the home of his parents, 626 North Illinois Street. He was a member of the Typographical Union.
Coroner Nash rules the death of John B Wendinsky of 313 Cornell Ave due to edema of the lungs after several days in City Hospital. He leaves a widow and three children. Omar Cave a barber on Indijana Ave died at City Hospital with autopsy showing pericarditis.
