Mayor Sees Test Of Cellar Nozzle Demonstration

Captain Newman demonstrated the Newman automatic distributing nozzle Thursday afternoon for Mayor Bookwalter Chief Copts and Board of Safety member William Schoppenhorst. Fire engine No. 10 operated by Engineer Johnson and Captain Winter tested the system at Maryland and Meridian streets, flooding a 20 foot diameter spray. The device uses 16 holes and diagonal slits to blanket water and melts fuses at 150 degrees. The test was declared a success though the nozzle is barred by the current city ordinance requiring automatic rotary nozzles in cellar systems. Insurance firms in other cities reportedly oppose rotary nozzles due to potential repair issues.
