Indiana fire destroyed the West Baden Springs hotel early Friday, with 200 to 300 guests rushing to escape as flames consumed wooden wings and a $100,000 bath house. No lives were lost though injuries occurred from falls and smoke.
The fire destroyed all buildings on the springs site, with a total loss estimated at 500000 dollars. The hotel, built in Grecian bathhouse style, had private waterworks supplying 1000000 gallons daily from Lost river. Fire protection included 4 inch plugs, 1500 feet of hose per floor, and in-house electric light, steam heating, an ice plant and conservatories.
Washington reports the state department states the United States cannot recognize ecclesiastical law. Negotiations with the Vatican on Philippine and Cuban religious questions are deadlocked, with American bishops awaiting the Vatican's decision. Cardinal Rampolla allegedly sought an official envoy to Rome, as in other Catholic countries.

William Flynn says he has secured three grand jury members who indicted Higgins for the petition for his parent. The names are Frank Fesler foreman ex-Sheriff Shafleton and Anthony Bals Jr plus Charles Bookwalter. Flynn expects the petition ready in about ten days.
A cablegram from the American Exchange in London reports ex Gov Hazen S Pingree of Michigan is seriously ill. Pingree’s son requested word to Michigan friends that his father is quite ill. A later dispatch states he is at the Grand Hotel London with acute peritonitis. Governors and kin had been touring Europe and Africa.

Major George W Buckingham his daughter Anna and two women Mrs Thomas Applegate and Mrs Gen Humphrey were fatally struck by a passenger train in Flint Michigan while out driving. All four victims died instantly and the two women were found on the engine pilot.
