Kangaroo steamship voyage and a wistful love tale
A vivid bridge of two narratives follows Augusta Smithers aboard the Kangaroo as she sails from Thames toward New Zealand, while Eustace Meeson, a Birmingham reader in London, learns she has vanished to New Zealand with no address to follow. He, unable to contact her, reflects on his failed attempt to woo her and the cruel twist of fate that separated them.
