A late July Jefferson City conference between Gov. Stone and Democratic national committeeman Jones focused on withdrawing Britain's name from the populist Gelket. Maj. Matt Crawford a widower eight years employed as a section foreman on the Missouri Pacific was lynched near Tipton in Cedar County Mo Monday afternoon. He had been arrested in Tipton Sunday night on charges related to an alleged assault on Mary Toelkle a 18 year old from Kansas City. Sheriff Lumen pursued Crawford to Versailles where an unmasked man stopped him and shot him after a confrontation.
