President Shaffer of the street railway company told a Son reporter he would not sign the council’s new ordinance. He said it forces new terms for every line, demands city concessions, and contends two storage-battery cars are ready for Irvington rapid transit, with two cars needed and August 1 as the target.
A Louisville dispatch claims Indiana Republicans realign around Gresham, with Gresham and anti Michener factions seeking leverage in the legislature and a split with Harrison loyalties. It notes Huston and Fairbanks connections, Michener’s bid to block a Gresham plan, and a Democratic comeback amid GOP demoralization.
Detectives Quigley and Gerber nabbed George Eltz at 590 8 Meridian Street on a grand larceny charge after a telegram from Rochester Police Chief. Eltz cried at the station, claiming innocence and noting a possible $50 shortage from unpaid accounts with Standard Ale Brewing Co. He admits driving for Schmidt's brewery and says he may have unsettled debts while living with relatives in Rochester. He is 35, with a wife and family in Rochester.
W. 8. Deed, longtime private secretary for President Arthur, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grand hotel where he had lived with his wife. He was almost 80, had suffered a six week illness, and his wife was with him at death. none of his children reached the scene. He had come here in 1875 and was then involved with the Gem company.
The body of Ting Allen of Salem was found in a shallow brook near her home after leaving at about 6 30 pm Friday. A coroner and jury examined the scene and an autopsy awaited results. Villagers wonder if foul play was involved or if it was suicide.
CHICAGO July 22. An engineer Kiitead and several others were hurt when Rock Island train No 14 went through a bridge at Ly man Illinois. The engineer is missing and probably dead. Investigations followed after a separate case of assault near South Meridian. A girl riding a tricycle tried to pass a drunken man but was grabbed. her dress was torn as the assailant prevented her fall.
Mrs. Annie Smith of Iowa Street near the J M I railroad attempted suicide by taking a large dose of laudanum Tuesday noon. Dr. Andrews of the city dispensary was summoned and she remained in a very dangerous condition at 4 o clock. She is described as very given to constipation.
New York July 22 The Herald says it has dispatches confirming reports of war in San Salvador. The Herald also claims that Mexico has ordered troops to the Guatemalan frontier with orders to invade if Salvadoran armies cross into Guatemala.
In Cincinnati on July 22 there was little change to the freight-handlers. the men still remain run.

New York July 22. Fireman William Thurnby of the Long Island railroad North Shore division performed a daring act saving a little child from certain death at the Lawrence street crossing. As the train neared Flushing at 3:25 p m the engineer saw children on the track and the fireman, leaping onto the pilot, stretched out and swung the child to safety while the train thundered forward.
