On Monday morning the second week of the freight handlers strike began with 18 000 workers out and all Chicago freight houses tied up. Depots are guarded as thousands of strikers prevent freight movement. Fears of a food famine grow as fruit carloads spoil and meat from packing houses cannot be moved, leaving warehouses full and city trade limited.
The 300 foot bell tower of St Mark's Cathedral in Venice collapsed Monday causing extensive damage to the royal palace and plaza but no known deaths. Police had warned locals to stay away as workmen prepared repairs and troops were deployed to keep crowds back.
A multi million dollar deal creates the Consolidated oil and mining company of Kentucky and Indiana. The new firm, capitalized at 1.6 million, will operate Kentucky timber mineral and oil lands and Indiana Grant county fields with offices moved to Mt. Sterling Kentucky.

The Indianapolis Gas Company plans to abandon the natural gas business in Indianapolis by Sept 30. Notices have been served on the mayor and to consumers as the city prepares to file suit to block the move. The city will investigate the company’s right to quit natural gas while continuing artificial gas operations amid two large gasometers near completion in North Indianapolis.
All parties in Cass County disputing who should replace the late Judge Chase will be heard. Judge Larry, elected successor, has been accused of taking the bench without gubernatorial appointment. Charles Bremmer, a shoemaker, recovered a shoe after a girl allegedly took it from his Meridian street shop where he had set it out to dry. W Riley Hart of 151 W Vermont Street and Mrs Barbara Trott of 46 N Illinois Street were secretly married on July 7 in Mrs Trotts apartments. The ceremony at 730 p m was performed by Rev Charlies E Bacon. Both spouses are aged between 50 and 60.
Mrs. Catherine Wise of 1643 Columbia Ave died Monday afternoon after weeks of illness. Neighbors had been bringing her food as she lay unable to care for herself or her home. Police were notified when her condition worsened. Charity Organization had arranged hospital transfer but she died before moving. Details about her family are scarce.
