Chicago July 10. Mob violence Monday night caused widespread fear among merchants in danger zones as strikers show strength. President McBride orders 45,000 miners out to coal for boycotted railroads. troops guard wrecking crews clearing tracks. Debs says unions stronger than ever.
A July report from Carcaco notes only a minor scuffle near Fifty-ninth Street while U S troops arrive to quell unrest. Debs supporters advocate peaceful action and call for arrests of violent troublemakers. Herbert, Wickes, and President Cleveland urged arbitration. Pullman refuses. Gompers may visit Chicago to discuss extending the strike.
A gang set fire to a 700 foot bridge on the Monon at Calumet river, halting traffic as two trains were trapped. Indianapolis lawyer Lew Wallace Jr, son of a famed author and deputy U S marshal, was among those arrested after troops dispersed a mob threatening saloons and guarding Fortieth Street. Armour & Co moved a meat train amid the unrest.
A report from Curacao on July 10 says Cleveland may issue another proclamation declaring martial law in Illinois and possibly nationwide. General Miles, seen at 10:08, indicated a decision is awaited from Washington and would be made public when received.

A Monday night strike at Westville derailed Eastern Illinois freight cars and blocked an eastbound passenger train. Militia fired over the crowd, killing Miss Clara James and Mrs. Michael Glennan, with one man fatally wounded and a brakeman shot and killed in Dan-Wihte. A Hammond mass meeting adopted resolutions denouncing U S troops for shooting Charles Fleincher and urged Congress to investigate federal soldiers' dispatch to Hammond. Gov Altgeld's stance on ordering troops was endorsed. Resolutions signed by Robert Gregory J M Tautmanon Revs H M Plapter and A H DeLong.
Sacramento reports indicate fourteen hundred strikers hold the depot as government troops mass at the capitol. Gov Altgeld predicts an end if strikes cease, while officials expect a clash with armed strikers.

Anderson Indiana July 10 John Drake and wife torn by domestic strife. Drake shot his wife at a neighbor's home then killed himself. The couple's deaths followed a morning confrontation ending with gunfire in the home of Mr Wykolf. Police report the tragedy caused great local excitement. Tuesday afternoon Drake died about noon after the shootings and self inflicted wound.
A small boy named Gso Carter was rough handled by a likely mad dog Tuesday morning while with his parents at 402 W Pratt Street. Flesh on his right leg torn in shreds, he endured severe pain before Dr Edwards dressed the wound. The dog belongs to Hibben the transfer man.
Auction notice from Blaine & Baron at 90.5 Capital Ave announces a large lot for a midweek horse sale on Wednesday July 11. It emphasizes rail strike will not interrupt the regular sale and notes many roadworthy horses will be offered.
