Road-house tragedy ends in fatal shooting near Maywood

Tragic suicide at canal linked to July jail term

Early Sunday Ambrose Tillman saw Jacob Allen, 22, jump from Fifth Street bridge into the canal and drown after walking into deeper water. Tillman failed to rescue him. Undertaker Whitsett recovered the body and took it to the morgue. Allen had been released from prison after a 21 month sentence for knife use in a W Ohio Street saloon. He had been socializing with his brother and Cornelius Miller at the Caldwell home near Howard Street before the act, and hinted he might be better dead days earlier.

Indianapolis Light Artillery Wins Interstate Drill Prize

Indianapolis light artillery won the first prize of 2000 dollars in a last week interstate drill in St. Louis, with Rockville second and Dallas third in artillery. Corporal Arthur KE West of Dayton, Ohio led the individual drill. The winners were feted at a reception and planned escort by the militia and possibly a board of trade banquet.

County board approves tax plan aligning Center township real estate to 1891 values

On motion of Tom Taggart the county board of review Monday passed a resolution making the assessment of real estate in Center township the same as that of 1884 except in special cases the board will decide. This effectively places real estate valuation at the 1891 level.

Wright Hurt by Stone Hail Near West Indianapolis Car Works

O A Wright watchman at the West Indianapolis car works was struck by a hail of stones and bricks when leaving the yard Saturday night. The assailants are unknown. His head was cut but not seriously and he is expected to recover.
