Murderer Mathley Hanged After Failed Self Harm Attempt
Robert Mathley, who murdered Emma Watkins and James Gregson in 1904 after she refused his marriage, was hanged in the Owensboro jail yard. He earlier attempted suicide by cutting his left wrist, injuring only minorly. Frantic at the cap, he trembled as the noose was placed. Assault suspect Miller held after hospital admission
The assailant Bowman, described as black, appeared at the hospital with a bullet in his nose, claimed self-inflicted. Thomas Miller of 8 Coachman, living on V Fourteenth Bt, was arrested Friday by Patrolmen Cousins and Rankine on weapons and shooting with intent charges. Both men reportedly fired revolvers at each other on duty. Miller allegedly fired first. The revolver Bowman used was blanks. Police dispute Bowman's account. Miller’s arrest followed investigation. Thomas McCarty Dies After Street Car Crash
