Death of Former Indiana Lieutenant Governor Mortimer Nye
Mortimer Nye, former Indiana lieutenant governor and four term Laporte mayor, died Saturday morning at his home in Laporte from paralysis suffered while delivering a July 4 oration at Union Mills. Born in Ohio, Nye spent most of his life in Indiana and was active in Freemasonry. He was a Democratic candidate for governor in 1892 and presiding officer of the state senate in 1895 and 1896, with a noted record of fair treatment. His death comes as Indiana lists two living ex lieutenant governors and no living ex governors.
