The Sun lists outside city rates for annual six hundred dollars, six months one hundred fifty, and monthly twenty five with city delivery at six cents weekly. It urges newsdealers to obtain terms, and asks readers to report delivery issues to the office. The column then critiques Indiana politics, noting Harrison, Gresham, Depew, and a 70,000 iron strike, plus calls for street cleaning and clearer street signs.
The passage cites a large scale strike threat by 100,000 ironworkers over wage reductions, noting high protection yet limited outside competition. It argues the industry’s protection and labor upheaval could shape votes as both parties face cautious voter enthusiasm.
The column surveys varied July era chatter from Edith Gwynne's scandal to Mrs Cleveland's attire, theater talk, and social vanity. It mentions political stances on Chinese immigration, marriage rumors involving Chamberlain Endicott, fashion pay rhythms, and a vivid comic sketch about a brutal dentist, all anchored by a milieu of press chatter and social color.
In a breakfast scene a wife asks why cattle resemble men. Her husband, focused on not spilling a soft boiled egg, receives the punchline that the small-horn breed is the vest. The joke appears in the San Francisco Wasp.
The seaside display shifts from wall to wall as striped and checked stockings return near the water. See through pink toes peek from holes in stockings, two piece jersey suits show off figures, and girls wear decollete bathing suits. They drape and drop coverings in staged poses at the water’s edge before entering.
John Williams, a farmer in the Illinois bottom district near Gilgal, Mo, reports killing seventy two rattlesnakes. He keeps them boxed as proof of the slaughter. Alfred Wigget of Reynoldsville Pa claims seven rabbits and a nine foot long snake were taken in a hunt. He says the snake charmed the rabbits and a single shotbagged the lot.
