A Democratic caucus faced delays as a Special Committee named by Speaker Honan failed to agree on a bill. Corn King Close denied bolting the caucus, asserting loyalty and promising to attend all meetings and present a report for Monday night's caucus.
Chicago endures a deadly blizzard with speeds to 50 mph and freezing temperatures. A ship foundered a few miles from the Diamond Shoals lightship in a gale. It is not yet known if any crew survived. The lightship crew reported spotting the steamship City of Savannah nearby this morning.

James K. Shiel aged 68 died at his home 419 South Warman Avenue on Friday from apoplexy. A Civil War veteran of the Thirty-ninth Indiana Infantry and later the Eighth Indiana Cavalry, he was survived by a widow and one son. Funeral services will be held at the residence Monday.
The Children’s Hospital of Indiana will be built in Indianapolis with a $300000 fundraising drive. Frank Van Camp chairs the effort with F M Ayres and others as vice presidents and Charles Martindale as secretary. A nonprofit charitable hospital, likely near Eighteenth Street and Capitol Avenue, aims for state support.
New York dispatch reports the Baltic left for Liverpool today carrying members of the Republic's crew who were brought ashore by the derelect destroyer Seneca to seek new berths.
