A severe fire at the Denison Hotel caused extensive interior damage and losses around $25,000. Fire crews battled flames confined to partition walls and upper floors, with delays in reporting and line deployment cited. Firefighters cut through walls, and a chimney-like fire spread between lath and flooring as the building suffered major ruin in the north wing.
The blaze began from grates using coal due to no gas, lighting wooden joists above and smoldering unseen for hours. Guests noticed smoke as flames breached the roof. a fire tower battled the blaze with high water streams, finally quelling the flames before daylight.

William K. Baumgartner vice president of an Indianapolis paint and color company slipped on frozen pavement after alighting a crowded College Avenue street car. He struck the left side of his face dislocating a cheek bone and will need surgery. The accident happened at Pennsylvania and Christiana streets, a man who slipped first had already made the spot slippery. He was taken to Dr Woodard’s office and then home by carriage.

London reports that the famous Arctic explorer Dr. Nansen and his wife will arrive in London Tuesday. Delegates from the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society will host him at public events at Albert Hall. Mrs Nansen, daughter of the late Prof Sars, is noted as an eminent singer and may sing at Windsor Castle. her entry into high society is anticipated.
In Denver, real estate dealer Reiché shot his wife Pauline Reiché on Saturday morning after a separation. He then turned the gun on himself, dying from a bullet in the right ear. Pauline was taken to the city hospital and is dying.
Seven year old Ellen Sedgwick, the institute’s pet, died from a brain concussion after a playful push sent her down a stair banister. Iva Flaller pursued in a corridor as peers romped, Ellen fell 14 feet. coroner’s verdict recorded instantaneous death. Remains sent to South Bend for burial after admission two years ago.
The Associated Banks weekly statement shows reserve up 2,080,000 while loans fall 1,573,000 and deposits drop 147,300. Specie rises 550,500 and legal tender up 1,483,000 with circulation down 363,300. Banks hold 48,975,209 in excess of requirements.
