Senator-elect Shively arrived in Indianapolis to assist Democrats in honoring their temperance platform. House Democrats caucused after adjournment hunger to crystallize sentiment on key issues while Hostetter of Putnam county hedged on a position, signaling potential delays on the Kreckner local option report and party lines.
In police court Ora Roberts, convicted of stealing coal, was released because Judge Whallon found him and his family living at 1310 Yandes Street in destitution with no fuel or food. Roberts said three days of work weekly left him unable to feed his family.
The Oceanic Steam Navigation Company owner of the Republic filed a libel suit in the federal district court seeking 2 million dollars against the steamship Florida. Robinson Biddle & Benedict represent The White Star Line in the action filed in New York.
Arthur Marshall, a young Black man, is accused of striking Nickerson on the head and attempting arson after a confrontation at 2134 Winter Avenue. Nickerson, badly burned, says the stepson attacked him and then tried to set fire to bedding before fleeing toward 2137 Elliott Street.
Mr. and Mrs. David J. Reagan of 2452 Ashland Avenue celebrate their golden welding anniversary at their son’s home 2887 Sutherland Avenue on February 3. Reagan serves as bailiff of Marion Superior Court No. 2. Married February 3, 1859 in New London Indiana, they later moved to Indianapolis. Family plans noon to 2 pm gathering and a reception from 2 to 10 pm with children and grandchildren present.
A generous caller gave $5 for an elderly veteran and his wife in Indianapolis. G A R and W R C members plan to send them to the Indiana Soldiers' Home at Lafayette. Major Escott of the Salvation Army reports Ensign Watkins transferred to Cincinnati. Captains William and Marinus Reuters take over Indianapolis quarters at 128 W. Ohio Street with nightly meetings.
The following bills were passed on second reading Thursday by the Beaver legislature. Included are measures to let railroads charge 10 cents excess on fares paid on train, require fares to be nearest multiple of five, a Meekville highway project for public sepers, the Griexe bill forfeiting unspent times in state institutions, the Wells bill numbering townships along county line roads, and a McGinnis bill amending the road law.
Mrs Anna Kuhn aged 52 died at her home on Thirty second and Walker streets after drinking carbolic acid to avoid an appendicitis operation. A German note was found beside her body. Coroner Blackwell said death occurred around midnight. She left a husband and grown daughter.
A House committee report urged passage of the Brolley Sunday baseball bill. Legislation recommended for passage includes measures to raise the state entomologist duties, curb camping along highways, end rebates on life policies, regulate life insurer incorporation, deposit securities abroad, create highway building theft penalties, salary township trustees, raise Soldiers' Home maintenance, ban second hand bottle reuse, and postpone the Murphy tipping ban in hotels.
An Indianapolis man urged several Democratic senators that the state owned University Park would be an ideal governor's residence with only construction costs. Democrats favored the idea but pointed out Indianapolis has ample parks and might not want this park for that purpose.
A late January hurricane tore through New York City injuring nobody yet causing property damage. A baby hurricane later brought gale force winds up to 56 miles per hour and disrupted ferry traffic with snow and a swift northwest gust.
The Indiana Senate approved bill No. 494 over Governor J Frank Hanlys veto by a 46 to 0 vote. It allows physicians with revoked licenses to practice medicine during appeals to the proper court, despite the governors denial of this right.
Senate passes King bill to raise Indiana mortgage exemption from 2700 to 1200. Fleming leads defeat attempt while Stotsenberg seeks broader exemption. Grube proposes 6000, tabled. Fleming’s effort to strike the enacting clause fails 41 to 8.
Bertha Williamson, a girl barely out of childhood, and Rev. James W. Richey eloped from Carmel Indiana to St. Louis with their four week old baby. They were arrested after relatives reported their flight and now seek forgiveness as they plan to return home. The minister and the girl describe a troubled romance and the aftermath.
The Indiana legislature adopted new air testing measures as ventilators are installed in each wing. Charles C. Glazier promoted a “Magic” air device with support from Samuel Shutt and a design team to improve temp and ozone quality. After a demonstration, observers accepted the test results and prepared to breathe with less fear.
