Chicago January 2 On the Board of Trade May wheat fell sharply to 79 and a half cents as Armour was forced from the long side dropping at least 10 million bushels. Bearish world reports and bearish crop news fueled the decline.
A German steamer named Bathilde Russ ran ashore ten miles from Holyhead after leaving for Cardiff. Seventeen crew reached shore in small boats, while the rest remained aboard amid heavy seas. Early reports misidentified the ship as an American vessel, but the Bathilde Russ is confirmed wrecked with the crew ashore.
Senator Charles Warren Fairbanks thanked Indiana's Legislature after a joint session for reelecting him. In Muncie Indiana on January 27 Michael Cosgrove a noted horse trainer was shot and seriously wounded by his wife following a domestic dispute. The wife says he threw stones at the house and the bullet struck him in the feg, with Cosgrove having been drinking.
Washington January 21 Congressman Lessler of New York testified before the House committee probing sensational bribery charges. He denied a Doblin statement alleging a statewide scheme and noted a new apportionment bill by Representative Bamberg that would shift senate seats in Marion and Hancock counties. Patrols were ordered to enforce a wagon horse-hitching ban as cold weather continued.

A Michigan tuner hired to overhaul the Grace MM E Church organ in Kokomo Indiana saw pipes valued at 750 dollars removed after he left. Mrs. Chris Van Louie of Winamac Ind died after her clothing caught fire while starting a fire in an oil stove on Monday night. The blaze spread to the house as she fled into another room and hid to escape rescuers. Firefighters pulled her from a window as the house burned to the ground.
