Several newly elected Republican councilmen plan a covert trip to Marion as guests of J H McCulloch of Union Trac k Company. Date not fixed though likely next Friday. press along to be kept out. Some councilmembers object, preferring McCulloch to initiate the trip.
Elbert H. Gary, chairman of United States Steel, elected chairman of Allis-Chalmers the world’s largest machinery firm with a $25 million capital. The move sparks talk of the steel trust expanding into shipbuilding and broader control from ore to finished steel products. A confidant says the steel interests may aim for unified control across mining to finished goods.
City engineer Nelson and Supt of streets Evans have not decided who inspects the Virginia avenue viaduct. Nelson says the viaduct is fine though smoke has eaten away the railing which is light. He notes the girders were recently painted to slow smoke damage. J A Barnard plans a new brick-and-frame residence at 835 N Meridian street in old English style for his wife, costing about 8000 dollars.
City sanitarian Buehler ordered Olney school in Brightwood closed on Saturday for fumigation after learning the janitor's wife had visited Mrs Lizzie Porter whose home is reported to have smallpox.
Chicago January 25 Harriman testifies at ICC hearing detailing roles with Oregon Short Line Southern Pacific Union Pacific and Northern Pacific stock control. He notes votes per road represented and comments on traffic routing. James J Hill says combinations cannot keep freight rates high and urges legal enforcement of tariffs to curb rebates while defending sane management.
Charles Abernather sixteen was arrested by Detectives Kinney and Lancaster on Saturday charged with belonging to the gang that robbed Maurys jewelry store the Dollar hat store and other places. Three other boys Scanlon Walters and Otto had already been arrested. At the Abernather home three more youths Charles Smith Jack Cowan and Charles Ware entered. Smith and Cowan were found to have pennies in their clothes and are believed to have robbed penny slot machines. Ware was held for loitering. Trials in municipal court are expected to uncover further petty cases. S Meridian street wholesalers petition for post office department action and Union Station substation will be abolished.
Chairman John Starr of Madison County convenes the Republican committee for Monday to address a crisis sparked by Congressman Cremer. Cremer’s push for an early convention upsets the county plan that would let the leading candidate name delegates. A state official warns District 8 could face deep trouble, with Union B. Hunt potentially rising to prominence.
Non union concrete workers on the Claypool hotel project may strike if contractors do not hire union labor or current workers join the union. The union reports 40 new members Friday night and about 50 more expected next week. total about 100 current members. Indianap olis hosts several hundred concrete workers each summer, with strong union presence in other cities and higher wages. If organized, the union will push for all city concrete work to be performed by union men, while the Carpenters union will refer its grievance over nonunion carpenters to the Central Labor Union for action.

A heavy Friday blizzard across the sound country tears through Seattle causing the total wreck of steam freighter ER. D. Smith and collapse of water front warehouses. Numerous vessel disasters and wrecked wharves are reported, with many more maritime incidents anticipated as snow falls continue.
German ambassador Von Holleben may arrange a stopover for Prince Henry of Prussia in Indianapolis lasting under thirty minutes with a possible lunch and drive. The Commercial club seeks to host a reception while Admiral Bob Evans is assigned to accompany the prince’s train. A Washington dispatch sets March 1 as the visit date and prohibits handshakes.

In a state department admission a complaint against Capt Louis Bayley naval attaché to the British embassy is acknowledged but details are withheld. Secretary Long previously tightened sources of information for foreign naval attaches after numerous complaints. Bayley says he has received no official notification of any complaint and regards the existence of one as immaterial.

George Compton reports his daughter Grace is missing. He says she went to stay with a friend Thursday night and took a train bound for Indianapolis Friday morning without informing him. He has not seen or heard from her since, police informed.
