Jesse Guy Newland, 22, of 842 Marion Ave, reportedly died Sunday night from excessive alcoholism. The coroner's verdict in West Indianapolis notes saloons were closed and he was found on his back doorstep after a day of heavy drinking.
Pack Williams a colored foundry worker at 121 Harding Street Indianapolis was found to have smallpox on Monday and removed to the nesthouse. Authorities report about 400 foundry employees were exposed and health officials are alarmed by the outbreak.
Rev. L. Herod of Denison criticizes white supremacy and urges Black progress through Christian salvation. He argues the race must abandon imitating white manners and focus on Christ, while challenging lingering white superiority and urging patience and self-improvement. The audience praises his forceful presentation and lauds him as a leading thinker in Indianapolis.
A prominent young Democrat said on Monday that John Blue will be the man if he agrees. Blue expressed willingness, confirming he is prepared to chair the Democratic Central Committee.

Mahalla Moore colored woman dies in Cincinnati on Sunday after being recorded as 122 on arrival at the city infirmary in 1900. Aide Horstman believes she may be that old. 17 children are reported dead except one son whose address is unknown. Zion church members will arrange burial.
The Republican State Committee will assemble at the Majestic headquarters on Tuesday afternoon to elect J. P. Goodrich of Winchester as chairman. Three candidates—W. H. Whittaker, Charles Haas, and D. M. Tichenor—seek the secretary post, with Haas drawing strong backing from friends and labor unions.
A barn on the premises of Charles Co. Watson, druggist at Wyoming and Virginia, burned early Monday morning, killing three horses and damaging vehicles. Watson’s drug store suffered about $100 in damage while total losses reached around $500. A drunken man was seen reeling from the alley shortly before the flames were found.

John W. Dittemore of 1012 Central Avenue died Monday after a prolonged illness of about five years. He had retired from business several years ago.
Active in West Virginia, the union has formed 60 locals with delegates at the Indianapolis convention. Since last year national officers and local organizers pushed unionization with great success, aided by Mother Jones who is a paid organizer and regarded as the best by National Secretary Wilson.
The wage scale for next year tops the agenda at the miners convention with West Virginia labor and coal politics in focus. Operators have been invited to a joint conference but likely will stay away. a state miners convention may form in spring to push the union scale and potentially trigger a general strike across West Virginia. Workers say operators underpay the union scale by 25 to 50 cents daily, amid interstate pressure to reduce competition from cheaper Western fields. Since the last convention, mine workers have been active in this dispute.
