Washington January 20. The cabinet decided to hold a conference with England and Germany as soon as facts are known. The meeting, likely to be in Washington, aims to avoid trouble with all three powers.

Frank Van Slack and Jank Van Slack, both wood turners at Lauter’s factory, attempted suicide with laudanum about 2:20 a m Friday at their home rear of 904 North California Street. Dr George Pendleton saved him. Domestic trouble given as the cause.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity calls for cloudy to partly cloudy skies. Warmth arrives Friday night, with higher temperatures Saturday. Observed readings include 26 at 7 am, 32 at Friday noon, and 83 at 2 pm Friday.
Arthur Gilchrist colored was fined ten dollars and given sixty days in the workhouse by Judge Cox on Friday for cutting Ike Shaw colored. Both worked at the Bates house. Gilchrist had long been the butt of jokes. Thursday afternoon he seized a butcher knife and carved Shaw. Several cuts were made but injuries are not serious.
Early Friday a $4000 blaze damaged the Duthie chain company factory on South Street, extending to the W D Allison chair plant. The fire destroyed the dressing room, ruined machinery, and left about 30 workers temporarily unemployed. The chair factory loss runs around $2000 with insurance cover, and the plant's machinery suffered significant damage.
At the reorganization on Thursday night of Company A Second regiment old national guard James Little was re-elected captain and William F Core and James B Duncan were elected lieutenants.
John D. Rockefeller pledges $25,000 to Franklin College if the institution can raise $50,000. Approximately $41,000 of the target has already been pledged.
