In Sr. Perenspund on January 17 a train carrying recruits between Slatovsk and Sawara caught fire after an overturned stove in the forward car. Nearly fifty died and twenty were badly burned as passengers leaped from cars. an inquiry points to skylarking in the forward car as the cause and criticizes the engineer for not stopping sooner.
Senator Boyd planned to deliver a speech at 8 oclock but did not appear as the investigation into the attorney general's office was postponed by a Kern resolution. Loveland questioned Mr. Smiths earnings under the statutory scales and called for a review of compensation. In St Louis reports, Archbishop Kenrick has not named a coadjutor for Bishop Chard on January 17.
Hans Mosier of 120 Huron Street was assaulted and robbed Monday night at 12 o'clock of a gold watch and change. A local resident directed him, then attacked him on Fletcher Avenue, leaving him unconscious. Detectives Thornton and McGuff arrested William McAfee on Tuesday morning.
