Man Dies After Belief in Mind Cure Ends In Tragedy
In New York on January 16, Jake Curtis a 33 year old telegraph operator at Bellevue Hospital died after a long tuberculosis struggle. Doctors say a broken heart contributed to his death, while Curtis had devoted years to hospital service and once led the telegraph bureau. His body was taken to the morgue after his discharge and return to hospital failed. Curtis’s brother was notified, possibly to arrange burial. Meanwhile Dr Selwyn A Russell a prominent physician of Poughkeepsie died from starvation related illness after years of promoting Christian Science and mind cure. He reportedly deprived himself of nourishment while researching cures, and died at his home under care of medical staff. His death followed a week without food and his own fasting experiment. He was a graduate of Albany Medical College and served on Utica State Hospital staff.
