At daylight on Thursday morning a mast from a three masted schooner was seen protruding west of Shovelful lightship. A life saving crew has reached the scene as investigators seek the vessel identity and fate of its crew after a likely collision.
The Damrosch engagement opens at Foglia Thursday night with Tannhauser. The Park features Howard Athenium specialists in the last half of the week and Al Reeves' troupe presents a rowing card at the Empire. The show is well worth seeing.
In Washington Jan 16 the Senate adopted resolutions requesting the secretary of state supply information on whether Armenian birth naturalized citizens can visit Turkey and if their US passports are recognized there. It also asks for consul dispatches from Cuba on current actions there. A resolution opposing the Monroe Doctrine as now proposed by the president was laid on the table temporarily.
A Panhandle line passenger train collided with a freight at Collier's station seven miles east of Steubenville. Brakeman Albert Rogers of East Liverpool was killed instantly. engineer James Conboy of Pittsburg was severely injured but expected to recover. Also reported mislaid pocketbook with 81 and 87.45 cash. In another incident in Missouri, a shell explosion during shell handling destroyed a building and fatally burned three workers.
County officers met at the Grand hotel to set stakes for the suit over the new fee and salary law. A conference between the mayor and the Board of safety will fix the location of proposed new engine houses. A small blaze at the Indiana bicycle works caused minor damage from natural gas. Patrolman Pan Carter, known for capturing policy players, was fined for profanity. New officers of the Indiana Jackson league were elected. Dr. Damrosch gave a recital and another is planned. George Co Haerle wed Norma Hollweg among several licenses listed.
Frank Butts of 188 Indiana Ave advertises thawing services for frozen pumps. The ad lists telephone 1791 and notes Grille and Fret Work. L Spiegel, maker at 316 HE Vermont St offers original and artistic designs at moderate prices.
Washington reports the Democratic national committee selected July 7 as the convention date after a close vote 82 to 78. New York Chicago and St Louis vied to host with guarantees to cover expenses and gate control to prevent intraparty cliques. A seven member subcommittee will manage convention details as talks on a near closed doors gathering faltered.
Ex state representative Charles A. Wilman faced trial here on Wednesday for allegedly administering poison in whisky to election judge Fenton at the Party death precinct voting place during the fall election of IS. The state asserts the poisoning aimed to render Fenton unconscious while crooked activities were carried out.

A notice reports Larry A Moore, a neat young man, missing since Sunday. He boarded at 135 N Illinois, was popular, and allegedly borrowed Grace Wildebrandt’s valise 87.50, $3.50 from the cook, 8 from the landlady, 1.50 from Courtney, and a gold watch and chain from a city young lady before vanishing. He worked as a Singer agent and may have lived at 140 N Illinois.
A Cape Town dispatch reports the Johannesburg shell exchange will not trade shares tied to arrested treason suspects. Kruger reportedly seeks 84 000 indemnity for each Boer killed in Dr Jameson raid, and a Cape Coast Castle dispatch notes Ning Premepeh of Ashanti agreeing to British terms.

Wednesday evening a group formed to organize a spiritualist church in Indianapolis. Gee Garber J I Robertson and E H Perkins were named trustees. The church will be called the First Spiritualist Church of Indianapolis and aims for a broad creed. A large congregation likely plans to build next fall. After a month long covert probe Chief Silazen and detectives captured ten counterfeiters in New York. Among them Nicole Taranto alleged US Mafia chief and Frank Diveroglia born in the king's palace Italy. The gang used boxes of groceries to import counterfeit bills stamped with the Grant vignette and were disarmed and jailed for examination.
Fire on the fifth floor of the Midland hotel in Kansas City broke out around 1 a m. Flames issued from windows and reached the roof but the fire department confined it to the dining room. Loss not more than 2000 with about 600 guests fleeing the scene. Panic spread as clothing and valuables were thrown from windows, and guests rushed into the streets. Fire escapes went unused and the blaze was blamed on crossed electric light wires.
A waitress reports a young man in a West Washington Street restaurant claimed to be Jessie Milburns husband and said he would not attend or fund his wifes burial after she died by carbolic acid. He reportedly avoided public notice in Indianapolis and left Chicago without contact, showing no affection for Milburn.
S J Nicholson headed the gathering as a large audience sang the national air. The report details a January train robbery in Nevana Missouri where bandits halted a Missouri Pacific freight train in the city and robbed engineers, brakemen, and a conductor. Five gold watches and cash and checks were taken, with one robber shooting a conductor in the nose and face. The fugitives fled into the night as officers search for the suspects.
