In Torria and Kas on January 14 the populist party is recognized by governor and senate, with Republicans likely to be expelled from the House by force. Both chambers adjourned. Republicans withdrew a mandamus plea to release the list of elected members. Arbitration is now suggested as tensions ease after mass protests against populist actions.
Crete Illinois endured a serious wreck when the Crete accommodation on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois collided with a Chicago and Erie through train to New York. About 150 passengers were injured and more than a dozen severely hurt as the central coach caught fire after an overturned stove. Names of the severely injured include D B Caldwell and F C Mahon among others. several with broken legs and internal injuries. Some passengers may die.
In Crattancoca Tennessee on Friday evening January 14, the steamship J C Warner while towing the steamship R T Coles in Skeleton river ice suffered two flue collapses. Two colored deck hands were blown into the river and drowned. Twelve more were seriously scalded along with the Warner's second engineer the Coles' mate and the Warner's night watchman.

Remains were sent to Cincinnati for burial.
The judiciary committee of the tower house has drawn up a bill to end lynching. If enacted, it imposes a $500 fine and imprisonment for anyone involved and holds county authorities liable if a lynching occurs.
