John Layman aged 22 suddenly went blind while on a wagon ride with Ise and Delker near Illinois and Washington streets. He sat in a saloon for two hours before his sight partially returned. No doctor was summoned and he offered no explanation for the temporary loss of vision.
Doctors clash over who should hold the coroner post as Dr. A. W Brayton seeks renomination while undertaker Harry Tutewiler pushes for the position. Some physicians threaten to bolt if Tutewiler is nominated, preferring a doctor over the republican candidate. Dr. Ira E. Dunlavy, deputy coroner under Dr. Nash, remains a possible alternative as factional tensions rise.

Zoller admitted ownership but expressed intent to kill the dog after paying a $15 tax, noting a $1 tax if paid properly. The exchange included “Damn dot dog” as Zoller stated his act. Dr John Osterman was arrested for harboring a dog without tax but the case was dismissed after conflicting statements about dog ownership at Osterman’s house.
Bishop Francis announces New Church Grace Episcopal plans a new house of worship. Deloss Root left 23,000 to the church with a 200 annual bequest to be paid over 15 years. Trustees agreed to relinquish the annuity if 3,000 is paid now. Probate court sanctioned the arrangement Friday. The exact building timing remains undisclosed.
Springfield reports the governor on Saturday posted a reward of 200 dollars for the arrest and conviction of the murderers of Peter Lisch, a railroad yardmaster in East St. Louis who was killed on Christmas Eve.

Attorney Ritter warns Schafer may lose liquor license by January 31 if the current circuit term ends without ruling. Civic Alliance circulated a remonstrance against renewal. the commissioners denied it, and an appeal to circuit court could keep the license valid only for this term unless the ruling favors renewal.
City engineer Nelson says the W. Washington street bridge will open to general traffic by mid next week. Only flooring remains. the street car company crews will work Sunday to finish the south roadway floor by Sunday night.

Anthony Wayne Gunkle, 75, prominent Indianapolis resident, died at noon Saturday at his home 411 S Kerstone Ave after bladder surgery last Thursday. Born in Louisville, he worked as a pork packer in Cincinnati before moving to Indianapolis about 20 years ago and running a brick yard on Southeastern Ave. Retired ten years ago, he owned substantial city property and belonged to Center Masonic Lodge which will conduct his funeral. He is survived by a widow and five grown children including Mrs J K Barnhill of Indianapolis and Mrs John Means of Denver, plus three sons in Denver.
Gov. Leslie M. Shaw of Iowa will become secretary of the treasury January 25 if plans proceed. He reached Washington Friday night, met the president, and after a Saturday morning visit to the treasury building had an hour interview with Secretary Gage. Shaw says he will keep the office force in harness during his term.
Roosevelt accepted Carnegie's offer of 16 million dollars for a national institute. Articles of incorporation were drafted on Saturday, marking the formalization of the plan aimed at creating the new institution.
