A session of Methodist ministers in Indianapolis discussed church policy on marriage. Rev E A Schall argued divorce justifies separation, not divorce, and urged making marriage a third sacrament. Some ministers admitted past weddings of divorced individuals but pledged to stop this practice.
A record day of sharp exchanges in the Indiana Senate featured Senator Fortune and others trading scathing remarks about party loyalty and alleged betrayals. President Gilbert’s opening jab on a labor bill and a fiery ten minute speech by Fortune on a railroad consolidation bill dominated the session, with Fortune’s bid to strike the enacting clause failing 21 to 1.
City acts to prosecute dishonest coal dealers for short weights. Police stopped six wagons, five underweight by 5 to 270 pounds, one allegedly over. No arrests yet while authorities seek direct evidence of short tons before charges. Wagons continue to be weighed at city scales.
In a morning court Judge Stubbs sentences Cinton Davis, 89, once wealthy but ruined by drink, to the workhouse after Davis pleads for one more chance. Washington reports the house committee on merchant marine and fisheries moved to defeat the ship subsidy bill this session. By a 10 to 7 vote the panel rejected the measure, a move likened to George Washington felling the cherry tree.
A seven year old boy identified as the father in law of H. Lami of Talcott avenue died at City Hospital Monday morning from injuries suffered when struck by a carriage at Pennsylvania and Washington streets. He had been unconscious since Thursday night.

Gorge F. McCulloch president of Union traction and coliseum committee secretary arrived back in Indianapolis from the east Sunday night. Hush McGowan traveling with him was due Monday. Renewal of effort to raise the coliseum fund follows a meeting promise. no subscriptions under $1,000 yet, fund at $201.50. The pair planned to return together but lost connections.
Sydney M. Dyer of Dyer and Kaxsman refutes a Washington dispatch claiming landowners will block delivery of land for the new army port project. He says the tale is a falsehood and cites no firm agreement to substitute 2000 acres. New prices and bargains at Baldwin's are noted.
Cleveland edged Milwaukee by 91 to 8 with Louisville 44, after a bitter battle among delegates. Eloquent speeches from Thomas Ganlon of Louisville, Mayor Rose of Milwaukee, and B F Sawyer of Cleveland followed the final vote, with Cleveland chosen as a compromise.
On Monday morning in Indianapolis students from the Indiana Dental College rallied on Delaware Street and nearby, shouting rah rah and other intonations. They refused to study or attend classes in a daylong strike, marking the first time the college did not celebrate Washington's Birthday with a formal program.

Admiral Henry Clay Taylor born in Washington DC moved to Ohio educated at Annapolis in 1800. He rose from ensign to master to lieutenant commander and commander, commanding ships and staffs across the North Atlantic and Pacific squadrons, serving as president of the Naval War College and later chief of the Navigation Bureau in Washington.
The Sun reporter and Admiral Taylor exchange greetings at the Hotel English as he arrives in Indianapolis. Taylor praises newspaper men, recalls long friendship with Admiral Brown, and expresses pride in the honor. Charles Rogers age 25 living at 433 Market Street attempted suicide by ingesting morphine early Monday morning. Lt Wardiner and others aided by a physician and antidotes saved him. Rogers refused to explain motive for the attempt and remained noncommittal to further questions. He is separated from his wife and last night visited his child in Maryland and California streets.
Richmond Ind Feb 2 The Wayne county grand jury did not indict coal dealers over shortages in sales. Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity for 36 hours ending Feb 24 calls for fair and colder conditions with partly cloudy skies. Temperature readings show 72 rising to low 32 and noon 41 with brisk north winds in surrounding states.
The Indiana House on Monday adopted a motion to non-concur in the Senate amendment to raise circuit and superior judges’ salaries to 5,000 a year in Marion County, with the amendment extending to Vanderburgh Wise Madison and Allen counties. Representative Bayre of Wabash led the assault on the amendment, arguing it would fail to attract better judges. A conference committee was appointed by Bayre, Bamaberger, and Stuck to meet Senate counterparts, though Bayre opposed the committee.
