Louis Ostendorf, famed Empire theater orchestra manager, fatally wounded Adolph Cassau in a backstage alley duel after Cassau waited at the stage entrance. Ostendorf overpowered Cassau, fired three shots into his head, then died soon after at Deaconess hospital. Cassau, a skilled musician, played second violin in the Empire theater orchestra. The confrontation occurred Wednesday night as Ostendorf headed into the theater.
