Coal Manager Charged With Short Weight in Police Court

John A. George, manager of the Ti dianapolis Coal Company, faced police court on a charge of selling coal by short weight and failing to sign the certificate. A purchase by J. M. Rose of two tons yielded a first load noted as short. The weighmaster claimed the yard knew the load was short when sent out, and the shortage was charged against the second load after George was arrested. The weighmaster said the yard load was short by pounds due to sliced coal weighing zero pounds. He planned tighter packing by the next delivery. Prosecutor Dan Brown argued the first short load established the case, but Judge Whallon ruled the buyers received what they ordered and George could not be charged for failing to sign the certificate.
