Crowds crowded the post office stamp window on Saturday as shoppers rushed to mail gifts. Clerks, stressed by endless packages, noted high demand for evergreen decorations and a lively toy trade featuring a roaring lion with a movable tail and a new French Jumeau doll line selling from ten to twenty five dollars.
Rev J L Smith won 1835 against De Pauw University over a commission on a will prompted by Swisher’s bequest. Smith induced Swisher to remember the university in his will, with Swisher drafting instruments that allocated 26000 to the university and a commission for Smith. The university argued Swisher later changed his will, but the court held Smith entitled to compensation for his part of the bequest plans.
The state agricultural board meets at the state house week after next for reorganization. Nine directors will be balloted, with Marion county candidates H. B. Howland, W. S. Holton, G. A. Stanton, and Cal Darnell. Other positions see M. Lockart, J. E. MacDonald, Orlando Kimball, J. A. Seigs, W. W. Stevens, Jasper Lagrange, John Tillson, Aston Jones, Jas. 8. McCoy, Robt. Mitchell, and D. M. Sankey leading for president, Chas. Kennedy for secretary.
At seven schools of the kindergarten association 2 279 children received Christmas presents on Friday. Mrs Laura Nash’s Pearl at school gave books to over 700 in recognition of their work. Arabella Pearle’s kindergarten on W Pearl Street hosted hundreds in happiness with candy fruits and gifts. The Indianapolis orphan asylum provided warmth and clothing to about 400 poor children at the old Christian church. St Joseph’s industrial school held a Friday night reception and Christmas festivals at First Presbyterian church. Tomlingen hall hosted Saturday afternoon Christmas exercises by Girls’ Industrial School managers.

Fany Fishbein a queensware dealer at 182 Indiana avenue placed four chattel mortgages on his stock and fixtures Saturday to secure notes and indebtedness. Two mortgages to Bernard Frey cover notes of 147.45 and 168.50. One mortgage to Chas Medias covers notes totaling 639.10. The fourth mortgage to Clarence Weir as trustee secures 274.82 owed to various local concerns for stock.
New York reports for the week show loans up by nearly 700000 dollars while reserves rise by 1768000 dollars and deposits grow by 250000 dollars. The surplus above requirements reaches 77937 dollars.

Four would be robbers attempted to hold up a Missouri Kansas and Texas train at Kelso on Friday evening. The switch opened and the train moved to the siding.
